Wonderful

I'm a Title I Basic Skills teacher and I use this book with all of my students. I teach several different grade levels and most of my students are reading way below grade level. My school/district has no prescribed curriculum for reading intervention, so I'm very glad I found this! Each section has a mini-lesson on a different reading skill, then a variety of passages at different reading levels to practice the skill. I can give my students passages that are right on their level, then I can "graduate" them to the harder ones. I also use the grades 4-5 version, Hi-Lo Nonfiction Passages for Struggling Readers: Grades 4-5: 80 High-Interest/Low-Readability Passages With Comprehension Questions and Mini-Lessons for Teaching Key Reading Strategies, to start off my lower readers. Each passage has comprehension questions, vocabulary practice, word study, and even a writing activity to go along with it. In addition, I use it for fluency and accuracy practice. That covers pretty much every aspect of literacy that students might struggle with! These books have been a life saver for me!

What a great book!

I teach 6-8 far below basic students, and these help teach grade level skills at their level. I also have the blue one and that helps with my kids who are way way low. The kids don't feel like they are reading "baby books," and I don't feel like I'm teaching first grade all over again... This book is worth every penny!

Very sweet book

We just got our copy of this "Bear" book today. It is a very sweet story with a great "message" about sharing and also the value of good friends. The rhyming was just a tad awkward in a couple of places, but that is the only reason I took off a star and really I wish I could take off only 1/2 a star. It is still an EXCELLENT book - as are almost all of Karma Wilson's. I am saving this book for my children for the first cold, fall day as a special treat when we can't go outside to play.

Our family has most of the Bear Books--This is a fine addition. I bought a second book to give to my nephews for Thanksgiving! My 8 year old and five year old both never tire of listening to these stories about the Bear and his cute woodland buddies.

Great book!!

We have "Bear Snores On" which my 3 year loves. I didn't realize there was a series until I checked out Amazon. We decided to purchase "Bear Says Thanks" and he loves it! Great story and message along with warm, colorful illustrations. Book was larger than I expected (and with a cover!) which was a bonus.

The Leopard is set in Sicily in 1860, as Italian unification is coming violently into being, but it transcends the historical-novel classification. E.M. Forster called it, instead, "a novel which happens to take place in history." Lampedusa's Sicily is a land where each social gesture is freighted with nuance, threat, and nostalgia, and his skeptical protagonist, Don Fabrizio, is uniquely placed to witness all and alter absolutely nothing. Like his creator, the prince is an aristocrat and an astronomer, a man "watching the ruin of his own class and his own inheritance without ever making, still less wanting to make, any move toward saving it." Far better to take refuge in the night skies.

What renders The Leopard so beautiful, and so despairing, is Lampedusa's grasp of human frailty and his vision of Sicily's arid terrain--"comfortless and irrational, with no lines that the mind could grasp, conceived apparently in a delirious moment of creation; a sea suddenly petrified at the instant when a change of wind had flung waves into frenzy." Though the author had long had the book in mind, he didn't begin writing it until he was in his late 50s. He died at 60, soon after it was rejected as unpublishable.

Archibald Colquhoun's lyrical translation also contains 70 more precious pages of Lampedusa--a memoir, a short story, and the first chapter of a novel. In "Places of My Infancy" the author warns that "the reader (who won't exist) must expect to be led meandering through a lost Earthly Paradise. If it bores him. I don't mind." Luckily, the reader does exist; even more luckily, boredom is not an option.

A book of deep beauty and insight

I found this "period" piece beautifully written, it's language so descriptive, its many metaphors unique and its characters so developed. That alone made this book a dream to read, to savor the words. In addition the inevitable political changes coming to this island, so often beholden to others, now slowly were being thrusted upon by the new Italy. Whether the Prince was correct that nothing in Sicily ever changes may still be an open question. The set piece of his day of dying was beautifully compelling.

More than a book I felt like I was there, unseen, a spectator, a silent participant in all the lives therein.

Backup Fanatic is clearly a book by a business owner, for business owners. This is not a technical manual, but is a true business continuity guide. In plain English, it lays out the important points to think through and the critical concepts to consider in contingency planning. Topics range from risk assessment to technical guidelines (on-site vs. off-site; recovery time; etc.), presented in an entertaining and accessible format by a tech industry veteran. For anyone responsible for organizational strategy, Backup Fanatic is an indispensible guidebook.
