Industry Standard Reference on LTE - Everything you need to know

As a field applications engineer working in the field of test and measurement, I was looking for a book to effectively bring me up to date on the latest standards in LTE testing. My own background cover RF, digital modulation techniques, and other standards, so I came into this book with a base of knowledge to expand into LTE. I make that statement because if you are a casual reader or "just interested", this book is definitely not for you. If you just want a survey of LTE technology, it is provided in Chapter 1, but that is merely 11 of the 400 pages in this tome. For basic knowledge, just google LTE.

If you are a serious student looking to understand the technology, where it stands today, its future limits, and how it is implemented, then look no further than this comprehensive work on LTE. It is already the industry standard, and likely to be the desk reference for any engineer working on LTE. Whatever can be explained in clear english is explained that way, including many diagrams and illustrations to illuminate the text.

The book covers basics of OFDM modulation techniques, equalization, multi-antenna techiniques, link adaptation, scheduling, LTE architeture, and physical transmission concerns. Indeed, an engineer working in LTE must be concerned with everything from antenna design to data formatting to spectral emission shape, and this book covers each of these topics in turn.

On top of everything, there is a well-organized index if you need to jump around the book, a list of abbreviations and acronyms, and a comprehensive list of references for further reading. As with all Academic Press books in this series (see my review on MIMO), it is well bound and will stand up to lots of reading.

If your job description includes (or if you are looking for a job that will include) LTE, buy this book. If you are an interesed amateur, save your money and get some free education on the web first.

Good coverage of the lower layers of LTE

This book does a good job covering the lower layers of LTE from the antenna up to the RLC. I wish it had more detail in the upper layers and the overall network especially the Enhanced Packet Core. It also lacks much material on the security aspects of LTE. I also wish it mentioned how carriers are adopting LTE and migrating EDGE and 3G to LTE. I also felt like the font was too small and made reading for long periods difficult

In short this is a good book if your interest is geared towards learning the physical and link layer aspects of LTE.

Excellent technical resource and foray into mobile communications

This book's main focus is on mobile communication 3G up to LTE (4G) and in particular radio access network (RAN). This is written by experts in this field (Ericsson) who are personally involved in the telecommunications design.

This book starts with a good overview of the telecommunications technology changes starting from GSM, leading to evolution of 4G / LTE. Basics such as spectrum allocation, link adaptation, radio interface architecture, access procedure relating to LTE cell search down to PHY level such as multi antenna techniques are covered. Where necessary, simple mathematical representations or computations, such as bandwidth utilization, channel capacity are shown. It briefly provides a simple overview of the core network (CN) component of system architecture evolution (SAE).

With an engineering background on 802.11, the mathematical coverage on OFDM and single carrier transmission appeals to me.

And for topics such as the access procedure for LTE cell search, it first lists the sequences, which is (1) Acquisition of frequency and symbols synchronization to cell,(2)Acquisition of frame timing of cell, which is determining the start of the downlink frame (3) Determination of physical layer CELL ID of cell. From here, it further delves into the specifics, providing tons of technical background and information. This is the approach used throughout the book, starting with general background information and ending with more technical details.

At times, I find the information too overwhelming for someone not involved in mobile communications design. However, this book remains a good resource both for novices and experts. I do highly recommend this book.

English for EFL purposes?

Five-minute Activities contains over 130 ideas for the foreign language classroom in its 100 pages. I read this book from cover to cover, and was pleased to be able to make many notes for my future lessons. Some of the activities are actually quite common, and perhaps most teachers would be aware of them, but there were many good ones that I'd never come across, including a few gems. Some are literally five-minute fillers, while others are worthy of spending maybe a whole lesson on. If I had to make a tentative criticism, it'd be that many of the suggestions have students generating language that would never be heard beyond the walls of an EFL classroom. For example, "A pencil is thinner than an elephant." I have mixed feelings about whether this is such a bad thing or not. On the one hand, students can practice structurally correct forms of language and learn whilst having fun. On the other hand, Five-minute Activities doesn't really present them with many opportunities to practise for situations in the real world, which may, of course, not be as fun. Also, I felt that there was a bias for activities that focused on self-disclosure, or competing to be the best in the class. Great, perhaps, for European or South American students of English, but not quite so good for students at my secondary school here in Japan. Overall, I'm pleased to have this book for reference, and I'd recommend it to most of my colleagues, even if some of the suggestions reminded me of what it used to be like as a pupil at a British elementary school.

Extremely good for all levels, a teacher's pet!

I've had a copy of this book since 1995. I keep it in my bag of things for class as it helps to fill in those odd minutes of leftover time.
Here in China I find the activities can be used for much longer than 5 minutes.
I highly recommend it. Money well spent.

So, I was recommended this book, along with a couple dozen others, from my TESOL class. I FINALLY bought it here in Seoul and I'm happy to have the help with the ideas. Teachers have to be creative but it's nice to have the help. The only thing that I might have liked to see (and this is just to spoil me) is have the book broken down into their categories in the front of the book, instead of just the index...and by level. I still highly recommend the book because I don't see myself living without it again.

Great, timeless adventure story

This is an outstanding book for those who enjoy stories loaded with adventure and intrigue. I've read many Alistar MacLean novels and enjoyed every one.

What I find quite stunning is one reviewer claims MacLean's depiction of the Japanese Military of the time is "racist" while another says MacLean depicts the Japanese conquerors as "savage monsters". I've got news for you...they were indeed savage, brutal monsters. Many of the leaders of the Japanese Imperial Army during those times were the most rabid of racists. The reviewers obviously have never spent time in SE Asia and talked to any of the inhabitants that were alive during the Japanese occupation of those countries. They'll be the first to tell you how absolutely cruel and brutal the Japanese Army truly was. These reviewers have no idea of the incredible hardships imposed by the ruthless Japanese conquerors on the people of Viet Nam, the Phillipines, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand, etc. I look at such reviews as incredibly naive.

Talk to a survivor of the Bataan Death March about the humanity of the Japanese Army. Wake Island was captured shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. When food supplies started to run scarce on the island, the Japanese lined up a large group of American civilian contractors they had taken prisoner and shot them all to death on the beach. The non-racist Japanese convinced the civilians living on many of the islands they had conquered not to surrender themselves to the Americans who the claimed would enslave them and torture them to death. They ordered those people to hurl themselves off tall cliffs and kill themselves rather than surrender to the Americans. Unfortunately countless numbers of those civilians believed the Japanese and followed their orders. Savage, brutal monsters indeed!

Well-executed adventure

I always loved Alistair MacLean novels. For adventure, I found him to be one of the most consistent and satisfying authors out there. This is one of his best. It has twists and turns, as always, but is also a bit more harrowing than some of his other novels. All of which sets everything up nicely for a great denouement.

Fall from grace...

Alistair Maclean's ambitious 1958 adventure novel "South by Java Head" is set against the fall of the British stronghold of Singapore to the Imperial Japanese Army in February 1942. A motley and desperate collection of soldiers, nurses, civilians, a small boy, and even a spy attempt to escape by sea aboard a tramp steamer. Nothing will be easy for the refugees, who survive the sinking of two ships by Japanese war planes and end up in open life boats in the South China Sea. Although they don't realize it, they are also at risk from a traitor or traitors in their midst...

"South by Java Head" was master storyteller Maclean's third novel, and it is a bit uneven. There is some good work here: Maclean evokes the dying City of Singapore with a haunting quality that will stay with the reader. The plot has the twists and turns that would become a Maclean trademark. The hero, First Officer Johnny Nicholson, is a tough but honorable man, nearly equal to every crisis. Unfortunately, Maclean tries to pack too much into the storyline. There are too many characters, facing one crisis after another. The secret that is the source of at least some of the trouble in the story hardly seems worth it when finally revealed, nor does Maclean put much effort into a brief romance for the hero. The Japanese are portrayed as two-dimensional monsters.

"South by Java Head" is recommended to Maclean's fans, who are likely to overlook the novel's faults for the chance of an entertaining tale of the Second World War.

About the Author
Alessandro Spina was the nom de plume of Basili Shafik Khouzam. Born into a family of Syrian Maronites in Benghazi in 1927, Khouzam was educated in Italian schools and attended university in Milan. Returning to Libya in 1954 to help manage his father's textile factory, Khouzam remained in the country until 1979, when the factory was nationalized by Gaddafi, at which point he retired to his country estate in Franciacorta, where he died in 2013. The Confines of the Shadow (Morcelliana) was awarded the Bagutta Prize, Italy's highest literary accolade, in 2007. Andre Naffis-Sahely's poetry was featured in The Best British Poetry 2014 and the Oxford Poets Anthology 2013. His translations include The Physiology of the Employee by Honore de Balzac (Wakefield Press, 2014), Money by Emile Zola (Penguin Classics, 2015) and The Selected Poems of Abdellatif Laabi (Carcanet Press, 2015).

I came across this book through a post on the Arabist's excellent blog--it was entitled A Libyan Novel You Should Read. The author of the post--Ursula Lindsey--wrote such a great opening hook to describe the books' author that I've included it here:

"Alessandro Spina was a Syrian Maronite who grew up in Ben Ghazi, was educated and wrote in Italian, and over the course of 40 years penned an extraordinary cycle of novels about the bloody establishment, brief flourishing and troubled aftermath of the Italian colony in Libya."

So a novel by a Catholic Syrian that grew up in Libya, was educated in Italy and wrote in Italian and his work has only recently been translated into English...awesome.

Lindsey also writes a very thorough and lengthy article on Spina in "The Nation": "A Stage Across the Sea: An unjustly-neglected Libyan novelist captured the twisted logic of colonialism, past and present."

Confines of the Shadow is the first of a three volume collection that texturizes the history of Libya. The second two volumes have yet to be translated so you will have to wait for the exciting conclusion. The book's translator, Naffis-Sahely, does a really beautiful job with an introduction that captures the labor of love he completed to bring this collection to the Anglophone readers (you can read the intro through google books). Naffis-Sahely also has a great blog/website that is a testament to his talent and breadth of scholarship. Prior to his superb translation (and really re-working/updating of the book), this gem had been largely forgotten.

Now that Spina's work is once again being read--this tome should easily ascend to the top of the reading list for any budding middle east/maghreb/european history scholar/foreign area officer/foreign service officer (hopefully I caught enough categories there).

Perhaps the most incredible part of Confines is its relevance today. Take for instance the comments by one Italian soldier concerning Italy foray into Libya:

"Just as a language is only useful in the area in which it is spoken, and is pointless outside of it, so it goes with Europe’s liberal moral values, which don’t extend anywhere south of the Mediterranean. As soon as one reaches the other coastline, one is ordered to do the exact opposite prescribed by God’s commandments: kill, steal, blaspheme … Once the Turkish garrison was defeated and a few key locations on the coast were occupied, we found a vast, obscure country stretching out before us, into which we were afraid to venture. Thus, we cloistered ourselves in the cities while waiting for daylight. Instead, the night is getting deeper, darker, deadlier and teeming with demons."

This is a novel that should have been mandatory reading for all western countries before we even thought about getting involved in the Qaddafi overthrow. And while, Spina's collection did win literary recognition during its time, his keen analysis into the Italian ethos likely did him no favors in winning widespread popularity:

"Italy’s obsession with catching up with Europe’s great powers is impeding its culture from recognising the legitimacy of other civilisations. We employ reason merely as an instrument in our attempt to imitate a superior model. We disdain civilisations to the south of us; in fact, it’s as if they embodied exactly what we wanted to escape. We’re a backward country that always keeps its eyes on the other European capitals: Vienna, Paris or London. If Venice had led the Italian unification effort, things might have turned out otherwise, but instead it was led by Piedmont, a lowly vassal of France, and we are the victims of those provincial beginnings. Italian culture seems to atrophy part of our organs. It’s no use trying to educate oneself, or to read books written elsewhere; whatever we do, a congenital mediocrity clings to us like a bad smell."

The genius of these stories is that much of what Spina writes transcends the particularity of the Italian colonial experience in the specific country of Libya:

"Generosity cannot overcome our fundamental problem: is our presence here legitimate? What right do we have to interfere in their destinies? Did anyone ask us to bring order to their world?" (location 3268)

On my part this is not meant as a commentary on past US/Western involvement in the middle east and north africa, however, these are important questions that should at least be considered and publicly debated within governments and wider society prior to intervention/invasion somewhere. Finally, Spina displays his gift for capturing what it is to be a foreigner in another country as he notes that presence and weapons will never confer acceptance.

"To be a foreigner is a magical condition: this land will never belong to me, no matter how many cannons and rifles I bring here; weapons will only protect me, and I don’t know how long that will last. Alas, you can’t put down roots with cannons." (location 3432)

Finally, I owe it to my former life as an English major, to state that this collection is ripe for commentary and analysis on the nature of 'shadows.' Spina comments that "The native is a living shadow" (location 3457) and he probably uses the word shadow a few hundred times. A properly analysis would delve into:
why/is this true?
Who is the sun causing the shadow?
what are the extremes of the shadows (i.e., when are they longest/shortest)?
How does a character's subjugation to a shadow steal away their humanity?
This is a book I will return to and which anyone traveling to/working in/being station to Libya should read...several times. I look forward to the translation of the following two volumes in the coming years.

A beautifully written book, which will benefit from a second reading

Disclosure: I was send a copy of ‘The Confines of the Shadow’ for review purposes, but the opinions in this post are my own and unbiased.

‘The Confines of the Shadow’* by Alessandro Spina is a collection of novels and short stories. They follow the transformation of Benghazi from a sleepy backwater in the 1910s to the second capital of an oil-rich kingdom in the 1950s. This is the first of a three volume translation of the novels by Andre Naffis-Sahely. It is a piece of literature very much unlike any other that I’ve read so far in 2015. Having just finished reading the book, I feel that it warrants a bit more explanation than I normally put into my book reviews.

Alessandro Spina is the nom de plume of Basili Shafik Khouzam, who was born into a family of Syrian Maronites in Benghazi in 1927. ‘The Confines of the Shadow’ is set in Libya, starting in 1912 at the time of the Italian invasion of the country. It is the only multi-generational account of this period of history, and was awarded the Bagutta prize (Italy’s highest literary prize).

This first volume includes ‘The Young Maronite’, ‘The Marriage of Omar’ and ‘The Nocturnal Visitor’. It covers the period up until 1927, when Italy and the Libyan rebels were engaged in a brutal war. The later novels in the collection cover the period through the rise of Italian Fascism and the Second World War, up to Libya’s independence in the 1950s. This is a period of history and a culture that I don’t know much about. While that meant that I came to the book without any pre-conceived opinions, I also didn’t have much understanding of the setting.

Spina’s work is full of encounters between pairs of people: husbands and wives, masters and servants, occupiers and Libyans. However these pairings occur, they almost inevitably seem to lead to melodrama and tragedy. The setting for these novels allows Spina to call on a wide range of characters. These include Italian officers, Ottoman functionaries, a 12 year old child bride and her teenage lover. The contrast between these characters and the interaction between the different cultures make for very interesting reading.

I’ve always found it difficult to critique a translated novel because obviously you are reading the translator’s words rather than those of the author himself. Andre Naffis-Sahely has previously translated works by Zola and Balzac, and has also had his own poetry published. In the introduction to ‘The Confines of the Shadow’, he explains that Spina died shortly before work began on this translation. This means that he could not be consulted on some of the more difficult passages in the book. But given the beautifully lyrical way that some of the passages in this book read, I think it is safe to say that Spina’s work is in safe hands.

I know that ‘The Confines of the Shadow’ is a beautifully written book, and the historical background and cultural setting is incredibly interesting. I enjoyed reading it, but I think it’s a book that will benefit greatly from a second reading, and that I’ll appreciate it more when I do so.

I’m sure that I’ll be returning to ‘The Confines of the Shadow’ in the future, but it’s not a book that I love, yet – 8/10

THE BEST CONTEMPORARY PLAY I'VE READ

Tom Stoppard and Mamet and Ives are all great. But they can't compete with a woman like Beth Henley when it comes to creating what true art is meant to bring forth: a sense of connection between people, recognizing yourself and others in an indescribable way, and honesty. No pretentious intellectual mindplay. Just beauty and reality. That is what makes Henley so great, but I can't even begin to say why 'Am I blue' is by far her best play, her most beautiful one, and probably the most poignant contemporary play I've read, period. It's a play the audience, regardless of whether you watch a stage production or just read it, can taste. Experiencing this play is like seeing a multitude of colors flowing like music across the page, and in your mind. The two main characters and the relationship they form as a result of a strange meeting in a bar, can only be described as funny and sweet, saying everything about human nature and what we need right there. A underage nuisance harrasing the customers ends up pestering a boy unhappily awaiting a 'date' with a prositute his buddies pushed him into. The characters are different in many aspects of personality and circumstance, but share a loneliness which, of course, connects them together. Henely always has such interesting, seemingly simple yet always complex characters, that often strike one as a bit eccentric; yet by the end of her plays the audience realizes that the characters are no more then themselves and everyone around them. 'Am I blue' flows like a river of reflection and truth, and it is effortless to read because of its understated beauty. That is the key to Beth Henely's plays, subtelty and truth. I think she wrote 'Am I blue' in college; it is fresh and uninhibited as a result. This is a perfect play, if there is such a thing.

Great Characters

I have never read a young character with so much personality, quirkiness and truth as Ashbe is at the age of sixteen in "Am I Blue?" If only they would write more characters like this for young actors to perform. I am directing this show for a night of one acts this fall and I envy the girl who gets to play Ashbe. The play itself is strange and wonderful and thought provoking. These characters talk about sex and love and friends and foes and don't make any excuses about it. A true gem.

How terribly "modern."

A really horrible play, if it can be called even that. 'Am I Blue' was written for a play-writing class, and it certainly shows. I've had discussions with more depth, subtlty and wit in a High-School Cafeteria, which appears to be the same place Henley is getting her dialogue.
Blatantly obvious character psychology; insipid symbolism; insultingly pointless (and wholly unamusing) plot wrapped in a pseudo-psychiatric one-liner resolution.
Those other reviewers drooling over the character of Ashbe are probably remembering her from one of the other thousand-and-one plays in which the playful-rogue-innocent stock character has been [over]used.
In fact, doing away with the pretentiousness of giving her characters names as though they were actual -characters-, and simply stating "Enter Clown" would have been an improvement Henley's work.
How this got past the teacher's desk and onto the legitimate stage is beyond me, but whatever literary trend it reflects, I weep.
The play in a word: frivolous.

An under read classic.

Within the first few pages, it becomes apparent quickly that Manhattan Transfer is not a traditional novel. Dos Passos presents a collage of New York City in the 1920's that even 75 years later describes well the modern city. His technique of jumping from character to character as they interact with each other within the city as some succeed and others fail provides a bleak, yet at the same time oddly wonderful reading. His injection of newspaper ads, songs, and advertisements captures so well the bustle of large cities. I can only wonder why he is often left out of the "canon" of American Modernists. It does take adjustment to read Manhattan Transfer, but you will be more than rewarded for your efforts.

This book helped create "Modernism" in literature...but it's also a good read
By Reading as Much as I Can
This book is an excellent read, but it does highlight some of the problems with the early phase of so-called "Modern" writing. Passos is trying hard (perhaps too hard) to describe everything going on around him over a period of several years. That's a hefty task for a novelist and no one has done it much better (except Leo Tolstoi).

Unlike Tolstoi, though, John Dos Passos never gets very far into the minds and motivations of his characters. Like Tolstoi, he has a cast of hundreds, but he is not as deft at giving even some of the recurring characters the realistic motivations and sympathetic treatment that Tolstoi does. One does want to like or feel something for *some* of the characters in a novel. Maybe we want to dislike or even hate an occasional character. It's probably part of Passos's scheme to have none of that sort of thing in Manhattan, but he does early on introduce the rather sympathetic character of Ed. Red herring, really. Ed will disappear into Manhattan, his concerns and doings of only tangential importance within another 100 pages. I'm sure that literary critics have created an industry of trying to connect Ellen/Elaine's doings up with Ed's, somehow, but really, Ed is just an average guy with an average baby in an average setting in early 20th century Manhattan.

Upon rereading some of it, I get the feeling that Passos did not know where most of his characters were going or whether they would turn up again in the book. It seems as if he knew he needed some of them to recur, to make it a novel rather than a very extended book of vignettes and sketches. He does sketches very well. Most of us would be delighted to find ourselves able to write such sketches, but, like John Dos Passos, even if we could, we would not find a publisher. We could blog our sketches, and it struck me that Passos is something like an early blogger. Lots of impressionistic, day-to-day observations, strung together mostly by the fact that one person is writing them down. The sudden development of dramatic plot lines (and their very rapid denouements) means that you can't just start reading near the back and "get" the story (unlike a blog), but that's one of the few things that makes it different from blogging.

We have lots of great observers out there in the cyberworld, observing and writing. John Dos Passos took a chance when he decided to make a living making these kinds of observations. We are indebted to him, forever, for these glimpses of the World's Second Metropolis and for those glimpses, alone, this book is more than worthwhile. Whether you love Manhattan, as I do, or you hate it, you will still enjoy much of this book. You'll also likely find yourself wanting to skim certain sections, just as you'd wish the person in the next cubicle would stop some irritating habit, you'll find some of the characters irritating. They are, however, quite real in their ability to irritate and that's something to accomplish. He's far deeper into personalities, personality types and dialects than, say, Hemingway.

This book also set up many decades of further fictions about New York City, so in that regard, it's also a must read.

Lots of energy but fades into history like the buggy whip

Ask anyone about the 1920's and they may think Jazz Age, Prohibition, Babe Ruth, Hemingway, Fitzgerald maybe Faulkner. Only a minority would throw John Dos Passos into that ring but he was in fact a giant of the time. His "USA Trilogy" and "Manhattan Transfer" were recognized and awarded the same acclaim as writers we know so much better today.

Hemingway wrote that "Manhattan Transfer" finally gave the world the real picture of New York City. Alfred Döblin was deeply influenced by Dos Passos's style. He ran with the same crowd. Drank and partied with them all and yet almost a hundred years later his own fame is far eclipsed by so many others. Why?

A great novel needs great characters and a central theme or conflict. Dos Passos was writing about a time and place; New York City in the first part of the 20 century. His focus is on atmosphere. He wants you to feel the city through it's accents, bustle, the frustrations of daily life, the food and drink and the movement of cars, taxis, subways, street cars and boats of every kind. Through all that he wants to convey the energy that's bursting in every direction but he also wants to expose the contradictions of daily life; war veterans not getting their bonuses, women yearning for more opportunity, backstreet abortions, failed marriages, banks and businesses and later drinking during prohibition.

Characters come in go very briefly, re-appearing later. There are so many that it takes perhaps the first half of the book to keep it straight. For me it was hard to follow let alone develop an empathy or curiosity for them. It felt very flat. He uses major events of the day as a timeline but aside from war and prohibition much of those references are obscure and thus one tends to lose a sense of time passing that he was likely successfully conveying to his contemporaries.

My conclusion is that it's too ambitious and there is too little for the modern reader to grasp. By doing so much there are interesting points and poignant scenes. But too often I was flipping back to see if I had already jumped to yet another vignette and double checking if he'd jumped a few weeks, months or years. Pulling this out of a time capsule I enjoyed this as a 1925 novel of early New York but I wonder if it were the book that I'd want to say best depicted New York at that time and I'd conclude that other works have surpassed it.

This is indeed the "Bible" for the clinical child psychologist. As a pediatrician, who through all my professional life have worked closely with child psychologists, permit me to review this very serious and professional handbook. It is edited by C Eugene Walker from Oklahoma and Michael C Roberts from Kansas with 114 contributors (all from United States). The first edition of the handbook was published 18 years ago and it has since turned into a reference and guide for students, adademics and clinicians in the field. The book is divided into seven sections with a total of 55 chapters. The first section deals with child development and the first chapter with families and children in history with a focus on American history, but I especially liked the chapter by Judith A Chafel and Kathryn Gold Hadley on poverty and well-being of children and their families. This is a new addition to this edition, but a very important one. Poverty and hunger are old phenomena, but only recently become a subject of research and interest to politicians. They should be interested, because poverty is a major public health problem in many developed countries. Data from 1996 in the United States estimate that 20.5% of the children were living in poverty. This well researched paper will give you information on definition of poverty, effects on development, health and psychosocial risks, resiliency and implications for clinical intervention. Section two provides different diagnostic assessments of children and adolescents, section three deals with problems of early life and clinical problems of birth, neonatology, infant and preschool period and section four about problems of childhood. This last section has 16 chapters with some interesting entries. I especially liked the chapter on mental retardation, which takes into account the 1992 American Association on Mental Retardation (AMMR) definition of mental retardation, where not only IQ, but multidimential classification was used as a novel way to look upon mental retardation. I would have liked an entry on the use of the word "mental retardation", which is very much debated (sometimes very hotly like at the last international conference in Seattle in August 2000) and at all not in use in many parts of the world, where instead the term "intellectual disability" is preferred. Section five has nine relevant chapters on adolescence, but I would like to see a chapter on teenage pregnancy in the next edition, because that is especially a problem in United States and United Kingdom, where we are talking about potential psychological risks for the next generation also. Section six conveys intervention strategies with good chapters on hospitalization and pharmacotherapy among others. The last section has special topics like cultural issues, divorce, grief, ethics and forensic evaluation. The chapter on impact of a parent chronic illness is very interesting and I would also suggest a chapter on chronic illness or disability in the child for the next edition. This topic is mentioned in another chapter (on contemporary issues), but deserves a full chapter. The words disability and intellectual disability are not mentioned even in the index. In this section I especially like the chapter on child maltreatment by Barbara L Bonner and collegues, which is a good review of the field of child abuse and neglect, but again the focus in on the United States and international work in the field not mentioned. A chapter on research in child psychology and the use of internet should be added for the next edition. The effects of the internet on children and adolescents should also be added. We recently had a case here in Israel, where an internet connection between two adolescents (a Jewish male and Arab female) were used by terrorists to capture and murder the 14 year old boy. I would have liked to see a section eight with chapters on the future of infancy, childhood and adolescence both in the United States, but also a chapter on international work and research in the field of child psychology. All in all a very positive review for a very useful handbook that can be used by both psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and physicians and thanks for a good editing job. It was a pleasure to read and use this handbook.

Is it worth it?

The strength of the book is that it summarizes the main issues on assessment and treatment quite well. Certainly worthwhile for a quick reference to current opinion on topics but if you're after the finer detail of theory this may not be your book and you might want to try "Child Psychopathology" by Mash & Barkley. The question to ask is, is this book worth $170USD new? If you don't mind spending this money then the book is a useful addition to a professional library for advanced students and professionals.

Highly recommended for pediatric clinical workers.

I am writing about the 3rd edition, which is the most current volume. The only disappointment that I have about this text is that I did not obtain it much earlier. The chapters are well written with many references for further study. The practitioner can keep abreast of the current literature on topics that s/he may already be familiar, or obtain authoritive information about other clinical areas not part of one's regular practice. This text is not written in the style of a dictionary, that is, the reader is given a summary in the style and length of a journal article. The book compliments the older volumes of the American Handbook of Psychiatry for which I have still found much use.
I also give strong recommendation for the Social Worker's Desk Reference that is available on Amazon. This latter book is a 2002 text that for some disorders gives a better summary than the Handbook. The Desk Reference is of value regardless of one's clinical license.
