Silverstein's poetry is good for the soul both young and old
By Vincent Price - NOT
My kids immediately fell in love with Shel Silverstein's when I introduced them to his work about 7 years ago... They were 1 and 4 at the time. (The older one got his younger brother interested as the younger one got older.) They are now 8 and 11 years old, and they still get a kick out of reading Silverstein's poems: They laugh out loud when they read his poems, and I get great joy from that. So this is our 10th or so of his books, and the boys love it. Can't go wrong with silly, clean poems that bring laughter to little children. Good for adult hearts, too!

By Theresa Michael
My sons love Silverstein. His books are pretty much what they want to hear at bedtime. I think Shel Silverstein (from an adult's perspective) was a very multi-dimensional, interesting, intellectual, creative and talented man. He's a bit edgier than "Dr Suess" in the sense that some of his poems don't have very happy endings - but in our case, his books have stimulated our son's minds to think outside of the box.

I grew up reading Shel Silverstein books all throughout elementary school. I was so glad I was able to find them on Amazon for such a low price. I am excited to read these and reminisce on memories from my childhood. Falling Up was one of my favorite books of poems by Shel Silverstein. I am even more happy that these books are in great condition. I also love that they are hardback and come with a protective sleeve.

Beautiful artbook
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo1D8WWANZWK3QP]]This book is as good as the artbook for the first film, The Art of How to Train Your Dragon. In other words, it's a beautiful artbook.

The concept art is split between designs for the characters, dragons, environment and props.

Hiccup and company from Berk are five years older now, and they are redesigned slightly to reflect their age. Nicolas Marlet is still the main character designer and a lot of his drawings are included. He still uses traditional media to draw in similar style the expressive and almost cartoon-like characters. Artist Zhaoping Wei provides the more finished look to the characters.

Both the viking and dragon designs are a joy to look at, and of course there new characters and dragons. There's Stoick's Skullcrusher, blacksmith Gobber's Grump, Valka's Cloudjumper, the two gigantic Bewilderbeast and of course other miscellaneous dragons.

Designs for the props and sets are also wonderful. I love the whimsical look and feel. There are many interesting creations, to name a few, such as the dragon wind vane, dragon feeding stations, houses and buildings, traps and war machines.

Environment paintings are really beautiful and scenic. There aren't many of those but when they appear, they are breathtaking.

Alright, some downsides. There's a good amount of text talking about the story and art, but the lengthy passages are not easy to read because of the small font size. My other complaint is the paper feels thinner and softer than the first book. If they make the paper any thinner, it would be magazine paper. Note that there are two publishers for this book, Newmarket Press and Titan Books. My edition is Newmarket Press. I read another reviewer comment about the paper stock from Titan Books being thin as well. So these are my two quibbles.

Overall, it feels like they've packed more artworks than the earlier book. Despite the minor downsides, I would still highly recommend this book, as well as the first artbook.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

Good art book but not enough
By Remo Williams
I loved this movie; the animation is wonderful, the plot is terrific, and the artwork is out of this world. That's why I wanted The Art of How To Train Your Dragon 2 in the first place: to gawk at the artwork--by that I mean the background paintings. My experience with these "The Art of..." books is the Miyazaki movies where he provides astounding prints of his movies' background water colors. Alas, these are not reproduced in How To Train Your Dragon. It's essentially about the characters, wonderful as they are. So here's a hint to the book publishers and editors: please include the background paintings next time!

From Publishers Weekly
Packed with Steel's trademark dense plotting and incidents featuring everything from sexual abuse and infidelity to car crashes and impossible relatives, her 32nd novel (after Vanished ) is set in California's plush Marin County. Page Clarke, devoted wife of Brad and mother of Allyson and Andy, finds her golden life shattered when 15-year-old Allyson sneaks off with friend Chloe to meet two boys. In a subsequent head-on collision, one boy is killed, Chloe is seriously injured and Allyson lapses into a coma. Page can't reach Brad, who confesses when he comes home that he is having an affair. Stunned and hurt, Page keeps a vigil at Allyson's bedside while also coping with needy seven-year-old Andy and an ambivalent husband who can't decide whether to stay or leave. Her only support comes from Chloe's father, Trygve Thorensen, who has been the primary caretaker for his kids since their mother divorced him. Other plot twists include a visit from Page's self-indulgent, neurotic mother and her sister, and a secret concerning the driver of the other car in the accident. While not drawn in much depth, the characters are believable; Trygve in particular is likable and nurturing. The ending is predictable but pleasant, bound to delight Steel's fans. One million first printing; national ad/promo; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club dual main selection.

From Library Journal
In Steel's 32nd work, Page Clarke waits alone at a hospital to discover whether her daughter will survive a car crash involving several teenagers. As usual, her husband is out of town, but at least Page can lean on handsome Trygve, father of her daughter's best friend.

From Booklist
Novels fall as easily from Danielle Steel's pen as concertos fell from Telemann's and overtures from Rossini's--and for much the same reason: she owns a formula that offers very few surprises but a great many pleasures. This time her heroine is confronted with her 15-year-old daughter's car accident and the revelation of her sexy husband's waywardness. The other key relationships are with her just-turned-seven son and the father of her daughter's less-badly-injured girlfriend. The secret to Steel's success--and this is what her sneering middle- and high-brow critics miss--is her ability to write simply and generously about love. Not romantic love, but the warm, trusting love that finds its own way to romance. Critics sneer because they want something more complex, broken, or seedy, but Steel is truer to the heart of early, medieval romance and perhaps to the heart of ordinary people (assuming women are people, too). Here, anyway, readers will recognize from their own lives the fretting weariness of hospital vigils, the exposed vulnerability of young children, and the aggressive self-justification of a husband trapped in a vortex of guilt and self-pity. A touching, satisfying romance sung, for the most part, in perfect tune. Stuart Whitwell

Full of Raw Emotion
By Christine Teetsel
Accident is a powerful story of how precious life is, & how everything you know to be true can just turn on a dime. Fate brings the families of 2 girls together in the most painful way. As time goes by, everything Page knows to be true can't be counted on anymore. Faced with the possibility of losing everything, Page finds the true meaning of love, family, & support as she is kept from the brink of emotional break down by a man who knows only too well what she is facing.
Danielle Steele's ability to make the reader feel every raw emotion is absolutely amazing. At times, I was brought to tears as I read the story & could feel the pain, loss, & ultimately, the triumph of the characters in this book! Wonderful!!

Concise but thorough
By Amazon Customer
This is certainly one of the better books of its type. Wegs and Ladrech have presented history in a lively, interesting style that manages to avoid a tendency to be dull or `dry'. The book follows a logical order from the end of World War 2 and the consequent rise of the Superpowers, through to the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe. All important aspects of this period are covered such as economic recovery in Western Europe, the end of the Eurocentric order, the Cold War, Eastern and Western European politics, post war society and the student riots of the 1960's. The final two chapters in the book cover culture and thought in Europe and a look toward the 21st century.

In the introduction, the authors freely state they have `favoured conciseness over excessive attention to detail'. In being concise however, the authors have merely avoided excessive, over detailed prose and have not omitted essential detail. This is a work that should prove invaluable to students of this era.

The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game, by Mary Pilon

The Monopolists reveals the unknown story of how Monopoly came into existence, the reinvention of its history by Parker Brothers and multiple media outlets, the lost female originator of the game, and one man's lifelong obsession to tell the true story about the game's questionable origins.

Most think it was invented by an unemployed Pennsylvanian who sold his game to Parker Brothers during the Great Depression in 1935 and lived happily--and richly--ever after. That story, however, is not exactly true. Ralph Anspach, a professor fighting to sell his Anti-Monopoly board game decades later, unearthed the real story, which traces back to Abraham Lincoln, the Quakers, and a forgotten feminist named Lizzie Magie who invented her nearly identical Landlord's Game more than thirty years before Parker Brothers sold their version of Monopoly. Her game--underpinned by morals that were the exact opposite of what Monopoly represents today--was embraced by a constellation of left-wingers from the Progressive Era through the Great Depression, including members of Franklin Roosevelt's famed Brain Trust.

A gripping social history of corporate greed that illuminates the cutthroat nature of American business over the last century, The Monopolists reads like the best detective fiction, told through Monopoly's real-life winners and losers.

Review

“Highly entertaining . . . Like Monopoly itself, the book unfolds in interesting directions, probing into lost Quaker communities, the early history of Atlantic City, and how a game originally invented to critique capitalism became its most diverting simulacrum.” ―The Boston Globe

“[A] fascinating history . . . The Monopolists lucidly weaves together a multifaceted story . . . [It] builds to an intense pitch--while highlighting several fundamental issues of capitalism.” ―Los Angeles Times

“A legal, corporate and intellectual whodunit . . .The tale, like the game, becomes a parable for American capitalism, with powerful players stamping out competitors and fortunes being made or destroyed at the roll of the dice . . . anyone who grew up playing Monopoly will have a hard time resisting The Monopolists.” ―Washington Post

“With more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie mystery, reporter Pilon reveals the tumultuous history of Monopoly . . . More entertaining than the game itself.” ―starred review, Publishers Weekly

“Pilon takes us on a jaunt through turn-of-the-century America, where we learn about such far-flung things as the origins of the price tag, the founding of Atlantic City, and the fact that one of the most coveted addresses in the game was home to some of the earliest gay bars in America. This is a must read for anyone who loves the game, and really, who doesn't?” ―Erik Larson

“Briskly enlightening . . . [Pilon] has woven a plush, often humorous tapestry of board-game and social history. Even passages devoted to sick children during the Depression fail to deflate the book's buoyancy.” ―New York Times Book Review

“What enormous fun this book is! Clever, engaging, finely crafted, and endlessly surprising--and revealing in passing much about the ghastliness of American corporate greed. Much like the game itself, indeed.” ―Simon Winchester, author of THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN

“Mary Pilon has discovered an enthralling story behind Monopoly, as much a history of our country as of its favorite game. She writes with the assurance and energy of a historian who knows she has struck gold.” ―Gay Talese

“Mary Pilon's page-turning narrative unravels the innocent beginnings, the corporate shenanigans, and the big lie at the center of this iconic boxed board game.” ―Stefan Fatsis, author of WORD FREAK

“Thanks to Mary Pilon's meticulous reporting and mellifluous prose, we now know the real story of the corporate greed and relentless cover-up that scars Monopoly, one of the most beloved and successful board games of all time. Finally, the truth is out.” ―William D. Cohan, author of THE LAST TYCOONS

“The book abounds with interesting tidbits for boardgame buffs but treats its subject seriously. After readingThe Monopolists--part parable on the perils facing inventors, part legal odyssey, and part detective story--you'll never look at spry Mr. Monopoly in the same way again.” ―Booklist

“Pilon invests this surprisingly contentious chronicle with a dynamic mix of journalistic knowledge and subtle wit . . . A fascinating, appealingly written history of an iconic American amusement.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Thoroughly researched and deftly paced, this fascinating narrative is at once legal thriller, folk history, underdog story, and exposé of corporate greed, and deserves a wide readership among fans of Monopoly, critics of monopoly, and all who enjoy a good story well told.” ―Library Journal

“This past November, a New Hampshire woman was charged with domestic violence for slapping her boyfriend during a game [of Monopoly]. The British royal family, Prince Andrew said in 2008, isn't permitted to play it at home because ‘it gets too vicious.' All of these people, and my own family, and anyone else who has threatened to eviscerate a loved one over their income-tax accounting, should be required to read Mary Pilon's enthralling new history of the long, pitched battle over the origins of the game.” ―Slate

“[A] dive into the real Monopoly.” ―Flavorwire, "10 Must-Read Books for February"

“The true--and downright bizarre--origin story of one of the most popular games ever made . . . A brisk read, and the readability is considerably heightened throughout by the author's sense of outrage . . . Fascinating.” ―The Daily Beast

“Few books can be said to have a transformative effect on the way readers look at a particular subject. Those that do often concern big subjects--books like Charles Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species' or Rachel Carson's 'Silent Spring.' While Mary Pilon's The Monopolists does not deal with matters like evolution or the environment, it nonetheless fits the bill. Irresistible . . . On the basis of this terrific book, Pilon . . . might just have a monopoly when it comes to writing on pop culture in a consistently enlightening, completely absorbing way.” ―Christian Science Monitor

“A fascinating history . . . There's plenty of turmoil in this readable book. Read it, and the next time you're circling the board with your Scottish terrier you'll have a deeper understanding of Monopoly's enduring popularity” ―Booklist

“Pilon's research is deep, and it makes for a solid caper about corporate greed.” ―Bloomberg

“[An] intriguing history . . . Pilon is a prodigious researcher, and delves into great detail about the intellectual and business roots of Monopoly.” ―Financial Times

“Excellent . . . Mary Pilon revisits the sordid story of Monopoly . . . . in glorious detail.” ―Mental Floss

“Engaging . . . there is plenty in The Monopolists to hold one's interest--not least, tips on how to win at Monopoly . . . it passes Go.” ―Wall Street Journal

“That history is interesting even if you don't love the game . . . The Monopolists is a quick, enjoyable read that takes less time than a game of Monopoly.” ―Minneapolis Star Tribune

“A deep dive into industrial and pop culture apocrypha . . . riveting . . . The book is superlative journalism.” ―Paste

“Smart and revealing . . . Pilon's refreshingly direct prose and ample storytelling skills make for a breezy, enlightening inquiry into the plight of an under-appreciated innovator.” ―The Rumpus

A Tale Within A Tale
By John Green
I've always been fascinated with the board game Monopoly, so I ordered this book to discover the real history. I find it to be well written and researched, with lots of great historical information.

I was interested in the history of the game itself, but this book turned out to be more than just that. The book centers around a college professor who invented an "anti-monopoly" game. His use of the word "monopoly" then drew the ire of the Parker Brothers company, who owned the trademark. In the course of defending himself, he researched the history of the game in the 20th century. The author of this book has gone even further, tracing origins of similar games into the 19th century. Thus, this book is about a modern story, and the history behind the game at the center of the controversy. I don't want to spoil the book by revealing the history, but let it suffice to say that there is a lot more to Monopoly than the popular story that it was invented in the Great Depression by an out of work salesman. By the end of the book you will know both how the story of "Anti-Monopoly" ends, and how the entire game of Monopoly evolved. Both tales are fascinating history.

The book is interesting and very easy to read, and it manages to pack in the facts about the evolution of the game without becoming boring. I liked the way the author fleshed out each character as he or she was introduced, and how he went behind the scenes of each part of the story to make it a complete tale. There are end notes for those wishing to learn more.

Summary: This is good, solid writing, and an enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

The Secret History of One of America's Most Popular Board Games
By tvtv3
As a child, I always enjoyed the rare times that we would gather around as a family and play MONOPOLY. We didn’t do it very long because they game took too long and someone always ended up getting upset. However, nothing could contain the jubilance I felt if I happened to outsmart the rest of my family members and won a game of MONOPOLY: it felt like a major accomplishment. It wasn’t until years later that I discovered I had never really been playing the game correctly. It turns out that a game of MONOPOLY, if played correctly, doesn’t last very long and is more fun to play than the “house rules” game I had always played as a child.

The actual history of the game of MONOPOLY might seem rather boring and drawn out, but in actuality it’s rather fascinating and is filled with all sorts of interesting twists and turns. In THE MONOPOLISTS Mary Pilon examines the history of the game and reveals how the game is rooted far more deeply in American culture and history than Parker Brothers (and now Hasbro) would leave one to believe.

“Monopoly” might actually have first been played sometime in the late 1890s. There were different variations of the game in different pockets of the country. However, it wasn’t until Elizabeth J. Magie created and patented a game in 1903 that promoted the single-tax theories of Henry George. Magie intended the game to be an education tool to be used in promoting George’s theories. Her game, called THE LANDLORD’S GAME, was the first to be mass produced, copyrighted, and patented to involve the buying, selling, and development of land.
THE MONOPOLISTS explores how Magie’s game spread to different parts of the country, how the idea was eventually stolen by Charles Darrow, how Parker Brothers lied to Magie and bought the rights to THE LANDLORD’S GAME and attempted to erase her association from history, how Parker Brother’s made a monopoly on MONOPOLY, and how that monopoly was threatened when an economics professor created and developed a game called ANTI-MONOPOLY.

Personally, I found THE MONOPOLISTS to be both a quick and fascinating read. I couldn’t put the book down and read it in a day and a half. The author, Mary Pilon, does a really good job of engaging the reader in the story she tells. Therefore, although the book is not something everyone will enjoy, it is not boring or dull.

Overall, THE MONOPOLISTS is a fascinating look at the secret history of one of America’s most beloved board games that reads both like a legal thriller and an engaging piece of American history. Recommended for anyone who enjoys pop culture, board games, MONOPOLY, or copyright issues.

A Secret History of Monopoly, but more than that too!
By Reasonable Reviewer
Mary Pilon, formally a regular writer for the Wall Street Journal, takes the reader on a journey of discovery on the start of the board and card games industry in the US and in particular on the path that the mega-hit Monopoly followed to rise to its top grossing status.

Yes, the story that we all know and love about the creation of Monopoly is not true, but by the time we get to that part of the book, halfway through, it is a less shocking revelation than it might sound from the dust jacket.

The book is exquisitely researched, and the five decades that the book spans are described in detail.

We get an insider's view of the lives, fortunes, and practices of early game company moguls Milton Bradley and George Parker, and those details help explain how Monopoly rose to instant hit status during the Great Depression and why folks were willing and eager to accept the false story of how Monopoly came to be.

I enjoyed the writing, and most of the facts presented in the book were new to me.

Well done!

I highly recommend this book!

The Hypomanic Edge: The Link Between (A Little) Craziness and (A Lot of) Success in America, by John D. Gartner

Why is America so rich and powerful? The answer lies in our genes, according to psychologist John Gartner. Hypomania, a genetically based mild form of mania, endows many of us with unusual energy, creativity, enthusiasm, and a propensity for taking risks. America has an extraordinarily high number of hypomanics - grandiose types who leap on every wacky idea that occurs to them, utterly convinced it will change the world. Market bubbles and ill-considered messianic crusades can be the downside. But there is an enormous upside in terms of spectacular entrepreneurial zeal, drive for innovation, and material success. Americans may have a lot of crazy ideas, but some of them lead to brilliant inventions. Why is America so hypomanic? It is populated primarily by immigrants. This self-selection process is the boldest natural experiment ever conducted. Those who had the will, optimism, and daring to take the leap into the unknown have passed those traits on to their descendants. Bringing his audacious and persuasive thesis to life, Gartner offers case histories of some famous Americans who represent this phenomenon of hypomania. These are the real stories you never learned in school about some of those men who made America: Columbus, who discovered the continent, thought he was the messiah. John Winthrop, who settled and defined it, believed Americans were God's new chosen people. Alexander Hamilton, the indispensable founder who envisioned America's economic future, self-destructed because of pride and impulsive behavior. Andrew Carnegie, who began America's industrial revolution, was sure that he was destined personally to speed up human evolution and bring world peace. The Mayer and Selznick families helped create the peculiarly American art form of the Hollywood film, but familial bipolar disorders led to the fall of their empires. Craig Venter decoded the human genome

From Publishers Weekly
Diagnosing the psychiatric condition of dead historical figures is risky business, and in a largely unconvincing book, Johns Hopkins psychiatrist Gartner falls prey to the modern tendency to reduce an individual's actions to a psychiatric diagnosis. He argues that hypomania--a mild form of mania--drove many of America's most famous leaders and entrepreneurs to succeed. The characteristics of hypomania include a restless energy channeled into wildly grand ambitions, a tendency toward euphoria and a feeling of being destined to change the world. In nine brief psychobiographies, Gartner imposes this diagnostic scheme on figures ranging from Christopher Columbus and John Winthrop to David O. Selznick and Craig Venter, the genome entrepreneur. He also contends that hypomania is a peculiarly American trait. Applying terms like "depression" and "hypomania" to Winthrop's spiritual ups and downs, for instance, is anachronistic and reductionist. Gartner does provide some proof of his theory with Venter, whose life and work can be scrutinized firsthand, though he hasn't been on Gartner's couch. The author offers us few useful insights into the lives of these historical figures, nor does he seem to have any qualms about framing his case for an "American temperament" solely in male terms.

From Booklist
By success, clinical psychologist Gartner means the impressive material achievements of the U.S. When he says "hypomanic," he refers not to clinical mental illness but to "a temperament, characterized by an elevated mood state that feels 'highly intoxicating, powerful, productive and desirable,'" that can, and sometimes does, easily tip over into full-blown manic depression. One by one he puts several Founding Fathers and a handful of epic-level business leaders--the likes of Columbus, Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Carnegie, and genome giant Craig Ventor--through psychological tests to determine whether they fit the hypomanic mold. Turns out, Gartner says, that not only have many of the nation's most charismatic leaders been certifiable hypomanics but at least one was, quite likely, genuinely bipolar. Lest anybody think this is a bad thing, Gartner asserts that without the risk-taking, no-holds-barred temperaments of these overachievers, the U.S. would never have gained its current status as the wealthiest nation in the world. Review
""The Hypomanic Edge" reveals a secret history of America, the hidden psychiatric underbelly of legendary successes and the cult of celebrity. John Gartner tells the story with gripping detail and a clinician's authority. After this book, you'll never read the business pages in quite the same way."

--Daniel Goleman, author of "Emotional Intelligence"

"America is a land settled by adventurers and risk takers, and the mania that made it great seems to be bred into its genes. In this provocative and interesting book, John Gartner explores that theory with vivid case studies and an expert's understanding of clinical psychology."

--Walter Isaacson, author of "Benjamin Franklin"

"Finally someone gets it. Through fabulous profiles of the likes of Carnegie, Hamilton, the Selznicks and the Mayers -- my favorites -- John D. Gartner explains how brains hardwired for success, otherwise known as hypomania, have contributed so much to the richness of our great country. Three cheers for Gartner. He recognizes that hypomania is integral to the success of those who challenge every assumption on the way to creating fabulous wealth, brilliant movies, and, yes, even a nation."

-- James Cramer, markets commentator for CNBC and thestreet.com and author of "Confessions of a Street Addict"

"Examining an assortment of historical and present-day movers and shakers through the lens of modern psychiatry, Gartner has come up with a diagnosis that could well help explain what makes America, well, America. "The Hypomanic Edge" is a surprising -- and thoroughly engaging -- book."

-- Joe Nocera, Editorial Director of Fortune, author of "A Piece of the Action"

"Gartner's genius is to make visible a psychological phenomenon that is part of our history and daily lives which we didn't see before. It will change the way Americans think of themselves and incite hypomania envy among the normal people of the world."

-- Harry Segal, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, Cornell University

"It's very interesting...it explains a lot about America."

--Richard Cohen, Columnist, "The Washington Post, on Topic A with Tina Brown" (chosen as a "hot pick")

"'American entrepreneurs are largely hypomanic, ' Gartner declares, but the story doesn't begin and end with today's would-be Donald Trumps. The United States is a land of immigrants, he observes, populated by those whose ancestors were energetic and optimistic enough to leave a familiar homeland for strange shores...America's long history of immigration...has made it a 'hypomanic nation.'"

-- "Boston Globe"

"A psycho-biographical examination of how the United States' hopped-up gene pool shaped our national character and gave us a head start to world domination."

-- "Baltimore City Paper"

"Are Americans rich because they're nuts?...It sounds right...a fun read...Gartner is right that hypomanic first movers matter a lot, and that we need a few more."

-- "Slate"

"Gartner unrolls life stories offering repeated instances of recklessness, grandiosity, innovation: Columbus, John Winthrop, Roger Williams, William Penn, Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Carnegie, Louis B. Mayer and Craig Venter. From published biographies (and with Venter, the human genome scientist, interviews), Gartner extracts some great illustrations: Theodore Roosevelt timed at 50 handshakes a minute; Hollywood producer David O. Selznick smoking five packs a day. In many readers, mood will elevate."

Brilliant
By Allan Gold
John Gartner's unique new book is a tour de force It is a page turner which I could not put down. Dr. Gartner brings to life men from each of America's five centuries as he interweaves his story of how genetically driven mood alteration altered America. Hypomania is a form of bipolar disorder that gave these men the restless energy, incessant sleepless speech and work capacities that made them world altering giants, but also the impulsivity, reckless speech, and, with most, delusional excesses which sowed the seeds of their ultimate personal decline. The book reads like a novel but cites an impressive array of sources in over 800 footnotes to document his thesis that America is a nation of immigrants who come here because of their bipolar genes. This "immigrant drive" made America a leader in business, the arts, science, religion and finance, and Dr. Gartner demonstrates how with literary skill and clincal accuracy.

He writes of the supreme accomplishments and pathological excesses of Christopher Columbus, 17th century religious leaders, Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Carnagie, the Hollywood Selznicks and Mayers, and the discoverer of the human genome Craig Venter. In each chapter Dr. Gartner gives the reader the background history, and sociological and technological information necessary to highlight the significance of the person's achievment. He uses written sources, but also has impressively and extensively interviewed biographers, colleagues, decendents, and

Dr. Venter himself, making the stories The Hypomanic Edge with information, surprises, humor, and compassion.

As a practicing psychoanalyst and psychiatrist I was very impressed with the scientific quality of the book, but having shared the book with several members of my family, I can attest that the the non-professional reader will find the book equally compelling.

virtues of the manic end
By Douglas Eby
Carrie Fisher, in addition to acting, is the author of acclaimed novels, and is a highly respected "script doctor." She is also bipolar, and has commented, "It's not all bad. The manic end is a lot of fun... just fantastic."

Dr. Gartner argues that mania and hypomania - the "manic end" of the mood spectrum - are radically different. He acknowledges that mania "is a severe illness... Manic episodes almost always end in hospitalization. People who are highly energized, and also in most cases psychotic, do bizarre things that are dangerous, frightening, and disruptive."

In the book, he gives clear explanations based on his clinical experience, plus stories of accomplished people which support the main theme of the book: that many, perhaps most, successful entrepreneurs and businesspeople are hypomanic.

It is easy to find many examples of leaders in business and the arts who show the typical range of traits: "filled with energy... flooded with ideas... driven, restless, and unable to keep still... often works on little sleep... feels brilliant, special, chosen, perhaps even destined to change the world... can be euphoric... is a risk taker..."

It is helpful to understand these qualities are not necessarily pathological, but positive qualities that talented people can use for success.

Dr. Gartner's Hypomanic Patient
By Psychodoc
I am a former patient of Dr. Gartner and a mentalhealth professional as well. In reading his book and then reading some of the reviews( especially the NY Times interview) I began to wonder if we were all reading the same book. I found the book to be entetaining, funny and astoundly accurate. I have treated many patients who are exactly as John describes in his book. I my self have or have had most of the characteristics described in "the Hypomanic Edge". When I spoke with Dr. Gartner last week he asked me what I thought, I told him you "got it right!". I have long held the view that most of the written material in field is just recycled trivia, completely useless. This book is ground breaking and we need more of John Gartner and less of Dr. Phil and his ilk who write books that are more Jacquline Susan and about as usefull as the novel "Love Story".
