Unique Scientific Study

from the perspective of an ecologist interested in komodo monitors thsi book provides both interesting stories and a comprehensive scientific overview of the species. if you are interested in komodo monitors or you plan on doing research involving the lizards, auffenberg's book is the bible you need to read. auffenberg's study is especially good at

(1) describing the macro- and microhabitats of the komodo monitor

(2) habitat usage by monitors

(3) cataloguing the prey eaten by monitors and foraging patterns

(4) general behavior and communication between monitors

and (4) quantifying competition between monitors and other predators and cannibalism of young lizards by older adults.

auffenberg's study provides qualitative data that is ultimately not supported quantitatively on:

(1) reproductive behavior

(2) cognition and intelligence

(3) home range and migration/emigration patterns between populations

(4) habitat preference (as opposed to WHAT habitats they choose, WHY they choose each and WHICH do they prefer first)

(5) community ecology involving monitors

many of the issues with auffenberg's book are purely scientific in nature - while his study provides a solid foundation for hypothesis generation and future research, it does not give quantitative answers to many questions behavioral ecologists have. because it was the first major study done on komodo monitors, in fact one of the first major behavioral studies done on any lizard, many questions are unanswered or left unaddressed. auffenberg's later publications show an improvement in methodology (1988, 1991), but nevertheless "the behavioral ecology of the komodo monitor" is a priceless resource for any person conducting research on komodo monitors. any publication that deals with komodo monitors is sure to cite "auffenberg (1981)."

from a lay perspective, auffenberg's book is an enjoyable, if sometimes dry, read. auffenberg's passion for these animals shows through his scientific writing, which is clear and straightforward. auffenberg doesn't often use scientific jargon when compared to other scientists, but he still requires patience while reading (especially his sections on skull kinetics).

i personally love auffenberg's book because i feel that while presenting very ground-breaking, interesting, and still useful information on one of the most interesting organisms on the planet, he captures a psuedo-scientific charm about komodo monitors that can almost be described as cultural. his writing is aware of its shortcomings but at the same time captures a wordless quality about an organism so different that science can only begin to describe it. perhaps this is my bias as a scientist, but i found auffenberg's book very inspiring for both science and elsewhere.

if you are interested in learning more about komodo monitors you should look at "komodo dragons: biology and conservation," which is a smithstonian press publication. auffenberg's study was conducted during a period in ecolog that has been replaced more than once by developing trends in the field. while modern ecology certainly has its flaws, it is much more holistic and multidisciplinary. "komodo dragons" (2002) includes much more information on higher end cognition, metapopulation dynamics, and conservation biology. there are many different indonesian ecologists who conduct research on komodo monitors presently, but the majority of the modern publications accessible to nonindonesians are published by claudio ciofi and tim jessop.

A perfect piece of work

This book is not a novel. It is a detailed description of almost all aspects of the Ora (the Komodo inhabitant's name for the Komodo monitor), not permitting the some anatomical details of the monitor. As the title implies, the Ora's behavior is magnified greatly. The book is a leading authority on the behavioral aspects of the book. Morphology, grow analysis, predator-prey coactions, and ecology information is also included and is very complete and well recorded (as is everything in the book). This is a must have for any person interested in this lizard, but is serious reading.

A superb monograph, mixing hard science with great reading.

Perhaps biased by a fascination for really large lizards, I was enthralled by this book. Walter Auffenberg, wife, kids, and various others spent almost a year on Komodo Island in 1970 doing the first comprehensive study of Komodo Dragons. The depth is awesome, everything from detailed morphology to studies of prey species to inventories of flora. Mixed in with the tables and charts are wonderful accounts of sharing a photo blind with an 8-foot lizard looking for shade, and how to measure a Dragon's maximum speed (chase him with a motorcycle). Sixty dollars and well worth it

Terrific Story of Terror on the Seas

Every now and then I happen upon a story that reminds me why I love science fiction so much. I love its imagination, the way an author extrapolates from the factual to the bizarre; and the more she can pack her fiction with solid science, the happier I am. Mira Grant achieved this for me in her NEWSFEED trilogy and her PARASITOLOGY series. Now she does it again, even better than before, in her new novella for Subterranean Press, Rolling in the Deep.

Grant starts from the premise that Imagine Network (which bears a striking resemblance to Syfy TV in our own reality) has moved from B-grade horror movies and reruns of science fiction classics into the production of documentaries. These documentaries, however, are not straight reporting; they involve searches for fabled creatures like the Loch Ness Monster, with the facts manipulated to entertain as well as to provide cover for the legitimate scientists who agree to participate.

In May 2015, a new documentary is in the works. The SS Atargatis is headed for the Mariana Trench in search of mermaids. We know from the outset of Grant’s novella that this voyage will not end well, for instead of a 2015 documentary about mermaids, we are provided with an excerpt from a 2017 documentary entitled “Modern Ghost Ships: The Atargatis.” This preview tells us that the Atargatis and all its passengers and crew were lost at sea — or, at least, that Imagine wants us to think they did. Still, if it’s a hoax, it’s a big one, because no one has ever again seen any of the scientists, crewmen or actors who set sail on that ship.

After that introduction, we flip back to May 2015, when an unlikely set of people are gathering on the Atargatis. Captain Jovanie Seghers knows she’s going to have her hands full dealing with idiot paper pushers from the network, television personalities worried more about getting the right light than anything else, prima donna scientists, and a troop of mermaids: women who wear tails and frolic in the water as a means of making a living, who Imagine plans to have appear in its documentary in fleeting glimpses to give the actual science being done some oomph.

Grant manages to tell us a good deal about oceanic science when she introduces her cast of scientists, plenty about the state of the media when introducing her camera operators and on-air personalities, and a good deal about the fad of dressing up as merfolk and frolicking in the water. I particularly enjoyed the work the scientists did in exploring the Trench, the deepest part of the world’s oceans, and attempting to learn more about its wildlife, the chemical composition of its water, and other genuine scientific inquiries. No one on board really believes that there is the slightest chance that the scientists will discover mermaids, but everyone plays along. The scientists, in particular, have an opportunity to do some groundbreaking work that could make their reputations.

Once the science starts in earnest, though, things quickly get strange. An early probe returns with blood instead of water in one sampling tube, and it shares as many characteristics with mammalian blood as with fish blood. The on-air personality who interviews the scientists is thrilled when they reluctantly admit that it is an aberration. But things take a turn for the worse when a crewman disappears, and worse still when one of the mermaids doesn’t make it back from a deep water dive. And they keep getting worse as Grant follows the scientific trail she has carefully laid down from the very first paragraphs of her tale.

Many Easter eggs lie hidden in this tale, if one cares to root them out; check out the ship’s name, for instance, or look into the “documentaries” done on mermaids by Animal Planet in 2013. But Grant does her best work in showing us how her sea creatures are constructed and how they work, all based on extrapolation from real science. It’s a delight to see her imagination work as she draws her mermaids and shows them in action.

My delight in Grant’s talent at scientific extrapolation did not lessen the horror of this novella one iota, however. These creatures make Jaws look amateurish. What would happen after an expedition like this one ended in an empty ship floating two hundred miles from its last known location? The immediate investigation seems content to leave it all a mystery rather than tracking down the source of the strange lights in the water and the odd noises at night, but how long before someone decides to investigate further? And what if these creatures decide that the land is as big a source of food for them as the sea is a source of food for humans? That chill you feel as you finish this book may be a trickle of seawater down your neck.

Loved this. A quick read, but with all the brilliance I've come to expect from Grant. Great characters, great pacing. The truly lovely thing is that she blends suspense and anticipation flawlessly with bright, in-the-moment fear, and then leaves you with lingering, deeply unsettled feelings, all in 122 pages.

Maniac Mermaid Mayhem.

Killer mermaids on the high seas. Been looking forward to this book for a while. Lots of character details in a short novella, the action kicks in quick, and the book flies along. The science behind the monsters works well. My only complaint was that I wanted it to be longer. More details, more science, more death by mermaid. But that's just being greedy. So if you like a good seamonster story with believable characters and scientific plausibility, give Mira Grant a shot :)

BIG & BEAUTIFUL Poster.

This poster is simply gorgeous. Be sure to measure your wall because it is BIG. I had mine plaq-mounted and had them crop the wording from the top and bottom. Looks beautiful in my living room, and guests always compliment it upon entering the room. Thank you Gregory Colbert for this magnificent art.

Awesome poster. Looks amazing mounted.

I have always wanted this poster. The price was great. I mounted it having the top and bottom writing cut out and the framer mounted the top writing on the back of the frame. This is big so make sure you have a big wall. It is calming and soothing. I put it in my room and love it.

Quite helpful but with some frustrating omissions...

There are few philosophers who had quite the same penchant as Deleuze for inventing new terms. I have not counted, but I would guess that even Heidegger's neologisms pale in comparison to Deleuze's. At least most of Heidegger's most important terms remain fairly consistent from book to book. Deleuze seemed to invent new terminology for every new book. There are good philosophical reasons for that since, as Deleuze makes clear in What Is Philosophy?, philosophy simply is the creation of concepts, and Deleuze created a lot of them.

Unfortunately, Deleuze rarely takes the time to define all of his new terms. That is why a book like this can be so helpful, and there is no doubt that this book is quite helpful in untangling Deleuze's terminology.

There are a couple of minor "flaws" of the book, however. I am not sure if "flaws" is really the right word, which is why I put it in quotation marks, but my vocabulary is failing me at the moment, so I will stick with it. As another reviewer pointed out, the terms are often defined by terms that are as obscure as the terms they are defining, which leads you to their definition, and so on, in an endless web. There is probably no way around that, which is why I do not think it is right to call it a "flaw" of the book exactly. This book also does a better job, in my opinion, avoiding that circular web problem than Deleuze and Geophilosophy: A Guide and Glossary (Deleuze Connections) which is another book that contains a glossary of Deleuzean of terms. I actually think that Deleuze and Geophilosophy is a good supplement to the Deleuze Dictionary. It is more focused on A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia and contains quite a few terms that this particular dictionary does not.

The other "flaw" of the book is that there are some frustrating omissions. There are three examples that I can think of off the top of my head. Deleuze's notion of the "dark precursor" is a notion I have never really been able to nail down. Unfortunately, the term does not appear in this particular Deleuze dictionary. Another example is the term "plane of consistency" which is a fairly important Deleuzean term that, for some reason, does not appear in the dictionary, along with "abstract maching". I was very surprised by some of these omissions since these are really important Deleuzean terms. I am sure there are other examples that I am not thinking of at the moment.

Ultimately those two "flaws" are no reason not to buy this book. I have only had this book for a little while and it has already helped me immensely. So I would still definitely recommend this book to anyone struggling with Deleuze. My hope, however, is that the authors and publishers will continue to update this book and, hopefully, will eventually add entries for some of the important Deleuzean terms that do not appear in this particular edition.

The present treatment bridges the gap between theory and practice by means of numerical examples based on real-life situations. Only classical electrodynamics is used in dealing with the interaction of light with matter, except in the last chapter on quantum wells. Included are tables containing indexes of refraction, extinction coefficients, birefringence, and other important material properties.

About the Author
POCHI YEH obtained his PhD in physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1977 for his research on nonlinear optics and optical properties of superlattices. Before he joined the electrical and computer engineering faculty at University of California–Santa Barbara in 1989, Dr. Yeh was the principal scientist of the Optics Department at Rockwell International Science Center in Thousand Oaks, California. Dr. Yeh is known for several important contributions in optics, including the development of a matrix method for optics of layered media; the theory of photorefractive phase conjugators; and the theory of wave mixing in nonlinear media.

The best book on layered media.

This is a fantastic book for scientists and engineers dealing with EM waves in stratified/layered media. It covers the simple case and anisotropic cases. Clearly presents both Fresnel equations, Airy sums, multilayer transfer matrices, and about everything else you want when dealing with these materials. Is also very practical and presents equations clearly, it is less theoretically oriented so it is great for piratical use, giving you what you need instead of just the starting point. If you deal with EM waves and dielectrics - just buy the book.

The paper is so flimsy that you can see not one but two pages back and forward. Honestly, I wish publishers would focus more on quality control instead of bemoaning the rise of ereaders. I wish they had a version on kindle.
