Eleven years after the publication of the first edition of the excellent book Geotechnical Engineering of Dams, the geotechnical and dam engineering community can enjoy reading and analyzing the second edition, completely revised, updated, enlarged and enriched. [...] All chapters are almost equally important and interesting for any dam and geotechnical engineer, but I especially like chapters 8 and 9, dealing with internal erosion, piping and filters at embankment dams and in foundation. Apparently, a great experience and original research knowledge of part of the authors of the book is embedded in these thoroughly executed chapters. I cannot also avoid mentioning chapter 12 – Design of embankment dams to withstand earthquakes – in which an up-to-date review and analysis of this sensitive aspect of embankment dam design is given, still under intensive development.
Dam builders have always been aware of the fact that dams are firmly bonded to the foundation. But, with this extraordinary book, the bond seems even stronger! I am sure this book will be an unavoidable professional reference and guide in the libraries of all dam and geotechnical engineers. About the Author

Robin Fell is Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of New South Wales, Australia, and also works as a consultant. He has more than 40 years of experience in geotechnical engineering of dams, landslides and civil and mining projects in Australia and Asia. He has worked on over 100 dams worldwide and has been involved in all aspects of planning, site investigation, design and construction of embankment dams.

Patrick MacGregor is a Consulting Engineering Geologist with more than 40 years experience in the assessment of geological constraints for major civil engineering projects in a number of countries. He has been involved in dam investigation, design and construction, and particularly worked on hydroelectric developments at all stages from inception to operation.

David Stapledon spent many years investigating large dam construction sites in various countries. He was a Professor of Engineering Geology at the University of South Australia (1964 -1993) and worked as a Consultant in Engineering Geology, contributing to major dam projects in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. He has more than 50 years of experience and was awarded the John Jaeger Memorial Medal for Contributions to Geomechanics in 1995.

Graeme Bell has been a Consulting Dam Engineer since 1962. His role has varied from providing the full technical input, design management and construction advice for new dams to the preparation of complex structural analyses of existing dams. From 1979, he has acted as an independent reviewer on many dam projects, mainly in Australia, but also in several overseas locations.

Mark Foster has 20 years of experience in dam engineering and geotechnical engineering. This has involved a wide variety of projects including dam safety reviews, design of dam upgrade projects and dam safety risk assessments for embankment and concrete dams. He has a particular interest in the assessment of piping and internal erosion of embankment dams which was the topic of his doctoral research studies at the University of New South Wales.

About the Author
Chris Docker has more than thirty years' experience in the field. He holds a post-graduate degree in Law & Ethics in Medicine from Glasgow University. These never-before-collected Christie stories were originally published in magazines of the times, and the majority of them were written before Dame Agatha was at the top of her game. Most of the nine tales (though not the one Poirot) focus on human nature rather than true mystery and bristle with melodrama (one can almost hear organ music crashing in the background). Christie's many fans (two billion copies of her books are in print) may not find these stories to be hearty fare, but as tea cookies, they will satisfy. Ilene Cooper

9 stories, 8 of which are rare

Most of the stories herein have not appeared in previous collections after their original magazine publications; apart from the "The Mystery of the Spanish Chest" and the title story, none feature any of Christie's stable of recurring characters.
Jack Leavitt makes the mistake of trying to blackmail "The Actress" (1923, Novel). 'Olga Stormer' - formerly Nancy Taylor - is *very* quick-witted, and came up through a tough school. She remembers Leavitt - and intends to turn the tables on the lever of his cowardice.
"While the Light Lasts" (1923, Novel) (The use of language at the beginning of the story is unintentionally funny - the phrase 'boy lover', for instance.) George Crozier has never properly understood that Deirdre broke their engagement to marry Tim Nugent for love, but married *him* for the material comforts he offered her, after Tim died in WWI. During their visit to one of George's business interests in Rhodesia, Deirdre notes a text on her dowdy hostess' wall that, of course, doesn't apply to her: 'What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?'
Alan Everard's little daughter asks him a riddle: '"Within a Wall" (1925, Royal) as white as milk, within a curtain soft as silk, bathed in a sea of crystal clear, a golden apple doth appear.' He absently answers 'your mother' - Isobel, the penniless society beauty who married him, a genius painter, rather than a wealthy man. But she has a taste for the good life, and a certain cold calculation...(The 'correct' answer is 'an egg', incidentally.)
"The Lonely God" (1926, Royal) really *is* a god - a small, forgotten idol, head in his hands, on a shelf in the British museum, without even a plaque bespeaking his name or country of origin. Then the unlikeliest chance befalls him: Frank Oliver, lonely after spending his life in the farthest reaches of the Empire, notices him, and feels a kinship to another stranger in a strange land.
"The House of Dreams" (1926, Sovereign) Fantasy more than mystery. John Segrave comes of a socially prominent family fallen on hard times - he makes an adequate living as a clerk, but isn't a likely candidate for promotion. There's more to him than meets the eye, but he isn't interested in forming relationships. Then the boss' daughter takes a fancy to him - but John falls for her 'court jester' Allegra rather than for her. But something's wrong behind Allegra's lovely facade, just as there's something ominous about the lovely white house haunting John's dreams.
"The Edge" (1927, Pearson's) Claire Hailiwell always expected her childhood friendship with Gerald Lee to end in marriage - but Gerald married Vivien Harper after a whirlwind courtship, and was thick enough to expect them to be friends afterward. The relationships don't quite play out as the reader might expect. :)
"Manx Gold" (1930, The Daily Dispatch) This was written to support a _Masquerade_-style treasure hunt on the Isle of Man, which in turn was part of a scheme to boost tourism. The story itself is a missing legacy story - i.e., uncle hid the majority of his assets and our heroes must unravel the puzzle he set them in his will. The narrator and his first cousin Fenella have an intermittent engagement (depending on their finances), and uncle Myles pepped up matters by 1) *also* notifying 2 other relatives, both unscrupulous, but 2) giving the lovebirds 24 hours' start. The 4 'treasures' in the real life contest were hidden where the treasures in the story were found, so the story is at first rather obscure about exactly where our heroes located the snuffbox treasure chests.
"The Mystery of the Spanish Chest" (a.k.a. "The Mystery of the Bagdad Chest") is a Poirot story that appears in other collections, such as _The Regatta Mystery and Other Stories_.
"The Harlequin Tea Set" (1971) is one of the few Satterthwaite and Quin stories not collected in _The Mysterious Mr. Quin_, mainly because it takes place in the early 1970s - forty years after their last meeting in 'Harlequin's Lane' - so it's not surprising that while the sight of a Harlequin tea set in a shop window reminds Satterthwaite of something, it takes him a little thought to recall exactly what.

Nice Reads, But Not What I Was Looking For

If good ol' Agatha Christie murder mysteries are what you after, this isn't the collection for you. Without a doubt, each of them are intriguing, and thrilling at times, but they were lacking in what I've come to expect from the "Queen of Crime." Harlequin Tea Set is an anthology of rare Christie short stories, perfect for an avid collector. Not so good for me, I think.

Not to say that I truly disliked any of the stories. But when you're a die-hard murder mystery addict like I am, stories of love, betrayal,and the like aren't what you want coming from Christie. My favorite was the only true murder mystery, with none other than Hercule Poirot: The Mystery of the Spanish Chest.

Enough of my ranting. By no means am I trying to dissuade whichever poor soul may read my review--I only want to prepare you for what lies behind the colorful cover of Harlequin Tea Set (and Other Stories).

This is an interesting collection of early Agatha Christie short stories, many of them appeared in various magazines. My favorites were The Lonely God, The Harlequin Tea Set and The Spanish Chest. I don't read many short stories, but I did enjoy this collection. I recommend it highly to just about any reader but expecially to the author's fans.

Informative and comprehensive handbook

Provides a good overview of the decision making process for developing business and industrial parks with some excellent case studies covering the economic analysis for initiating new construction.

Only reason I did not provide a fifth star was that the material is now about 10 years out of date, and it requires some re-working to incorporate changes to the industry since the 2007/08 recession and trends in the current market-place.

Excellent, but data needs update

Overall the book was excellent, but the data is only relevant to 2000. Most of the data needs update after the 2008 crisise. But at least if you are interested in business park development, this book gives you a solid start.

I must say if you read one Dr.Ben book you read them all. However the African Origins of Major Western Religion is on of Dr.Ben's greatest works. Dr.Ben explains the ideologies of Christianity,Islam, and Judism confronting the fact that all of these religions are based on African Spiritual concepts. He shows in an easy to understand manner the stolen concepts that europeans have used for their imperilistic benefit. This book will make you question why it is you believe what you believe as well as where do you stand as a human being in the universe. I highly recommend this book to all students of African history, and Religious concepts.

Another classical researched body of work by DR. Yosef ben Yochannan. he deals with the early african origins of judaism (hebrew faith) Christianity and islam. He shows how the ten commandments were extracted from the 147 confessions so called "negative confessions" as well as african folklore nad mythology that went into the making of these so called "western religion" he deals with early african character who played critical roles in the early development of "judaism", christianity and islam. such characters as st. Cyprian, Tertullian, St. Augustine. Bilal ibn rabah, Al-jahiz and Ibrahim al Mahdi. this work is in depth and well researched. it should be read by all, but of course only by some.

A THOUGHT-PROVOKING, CHALLENGING (IF CONTROVERSIAL) THESIS

Yosef A.A. (Alfredo Antonio) Ben-Jochannan (born 1918 in Ethiopia; known simply as "Dr. Ben" to his students and readers) is an American historian specializing in Africa.

He writes in the Introduction to this 1970 book (reprinted in 1991), "(T)he main purpose of this work is to show that there is another phase to the greatness that is still 'MOTHER AFRICA,' the MOTHER OF MANKIND, a sort of 'GARDEN OF EDEN,' also to provide another perspective in Africa's major contribution to world civilization which may well assist in rearranging the present and future tenets of religious thought."

"I shall show that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are as much African as they are Asian in origin, and in no sense what-so-ever European as the title, 'Western Religions' suggests..." (Pg. vi)
"The only reason that the three indigenous African Popes of the Roman Catholic Church have not been examined here ... is because they have done nothing outstanding in the history of Christendom..." (Pg. 137)
"Yet all of these (Ten) 'Commandments' and the lesser ones---which most people do not know exist---are almost exact copies of laws and religious philosophical concepts which the African Jews, as they were by that time, lived under..." (Pg. 147-148)
