THE BEST CONTEMPORARY PLAY I'VE READ

Tom Stoppard and Mamet and Ives are all great. But they can't compete with a woman like Beth Henley when it comes to creating what true art is meant to bring forth: a sense of connection between people, recognizing yourself and others in an indescribable way, and honesty. No pretentious intellectual mindplay. Just beauty and reality. That is what makes Henley so great, but I can't even begin to say why 'Am I blue' is by far her best play, her most beautiful one, and probably the most poignant contemporary play I've read, period. It's a play the audience, regardless of whether you watch a stage production or just read it, can taste. Experiencing this play is like seeing a multitude of colors flowing like music across the page, and in your mind. The two main characters and the relationship they form as a result of a strange meeting in a bar, can only be described as funny and sweet, saying everything about human nature and what we need right there. A underage nuisance harrasing the customers ends up pestering a boy unhappily awaiting a 'date' with a prositute his buddies pushed him into. The characters are different in many aspects of personality and circumstance, but share a loneliness which, of course, connects them together. Henely always has such interesting, seemingly simple yet always complex characters, that often strike one as a bit eccentric; yet by the end of her plays the audience realizes that the characters are no more then themselves and everyone around them. 'Am I blue' flows like a river of reflection and truth, and it is effortless to read because of its understated beauty. That is the key to Beth Henely's plays, subtelty and truth. I think she wrote 'Am I blue' in college; it is fresh and uninhibited as a result. This is a perfect play, if there is such a thing.

Great Characters

I have never read a young character with so much personality, quirkiness and truth as Ashbe is at the age of sixteen in "Am I Blue?" If only they would write more characters like this for young actors to perform. I am directing this show for a night of one acts this fall and I envy the girl who gets to play Ashbe. The play itself is strange and wonderful and thought provoking. These characters talk about sex and love and friends and foes and don't make any excuses about it. A true gem.

How terribly "modern."

A really horrible play, if it can be called even that. 'Am I Blue' was written for a play-writing class, and it certainly shows. I've had discussions with more depth, subtlty and wit in a High-School Cafeteria, which appears to be the same place Henley is getting her dialogue.
Blatantly obvious character psychology; insipid symbolism; insultingly pointless (and wholly unamusing) plot wrapped in a pseudo-psychiatric one-liner resolution.
Those other reviewers drooling over the character of Ashbe are probably remembering her from one of the other thousand-and-one plays in which the playful-rogue-innocent stock character has been [over]used.
In fact, doing away with the pretentiousness of giving her characters names as though they were actual -characters-, and simply stating "Enter Clown" would have been an improvement Henley's work.
How this got past the teacher's desk and onto the legitimate stage is beyond me, but whatever literary trend it reflects, I weep.
The play in a word: frivolous.

An under read classic.

Within the first few pages, it becomes apparent quickly that Manhattan Transfer is not a traditional novel. Dos Passos presents a collage of New York City in the 1920's that even 75 years later describes well the modern city. His technique of jumping from character to character as they interact with each other within the city as some succeed and others fail provides a bleak, yet at the same time oddly wonderful reading. His injection of newspaper ads, songs, and advertisements captures so well the bustle of large cities. I can only wonder why he is often left out of the "canon" of American Modernists. It does take adjustment to read Manhattan Transfer, but you will be more than rewarded for your efforts.

This book helped create "Modernism" in literature...but it's also a good read
By Reading as Much as I Can
This book is an excellent read, but it does highlight some of the problems with the early phase of so-called "Modern" writing. Passos is trying hard (perhaps too hard) to describe everything going on around him over a period of several years. That's a hefty task for a novelist and no one has done it much better (except Leo Tolstoi).

Unlike Tolstoi, though, John Dos Passos never gets very far into the minds and motivations of his characters. Like Tolstoi, he has a cast of hundreds, but he is not as deft at giving even some of the recurring characters the realistic motivations and sympathetic treatment that Tolstoi does. One does want to like or feel something for *some* of the characters in a novel. Maybe we want to dislike or even hate an occasional character. It's probably part of Passos's scheme to have none of that sort of thing in Manhattan, but he does early on introduce the rather sympathetic character of Ed. Red herring, really. Ed will disappear into Manhattan, his concerns and doings of only tangential importance within another 100 pages. I'm sure that literary critics have created an industry of trying to connect Ellen/Elaine's doings up with Ed's, somehow, but really, Ed is just an average guy with an average baby in an average setting in early 20th century Manhattan.

Upon rereading some of it, I get the feeling that Passos did not know where most of his characters were going or whether they would turn up again in the book. It seems as if he knew he needed some of them to recur, to make it a novel rather than a very extended book of vignettes and sketches. He does sketches very well. Most of us would be delighted to find ourselves able to write such sketches, but, like John Dos Passos, even if we could, we would not find a publisher. We could blog our sketches, and it struck me that Passos is something like an early blogger. Lots of impressionistic, day-to-day observations, strung together mostly by the fact that one person is writing them down. The sudden development of dramatic plot lines (and their very rapid denouements) means that you can't just start reading near the back and "get" the story (unlike a blog), but that's one of the few things that makes it different from blogging.

We have lots of great observers out there in the cyberworld, observing and writing. John Dos Passos took a chance when he decided to make a living making these kinds of observations. We are indebted to him, forever, for these glimpses of the World's Second Metropolis and for those glimpses, alone, this book is more than worthwhile. Whether you love Manhattan, as I do, or you hate it, you will still enjoy much of this book. You'll also likely find yourself wanting to skim certain sections, just as you'd wish the person in the next cubicle would stop some irritating habit, you'll find some of the characters irritating. They are, however, quite real in their ability to irritate and that's something to accomplish. He's far deeper into personalities, personality types and dialects than, say, Hemingway.

This book also set up many decades of further fictions about New York City, so in that regard, it's also a must read.

Lots of energy but fades into history like the buggy whip

Ask anyone about the 1920's and they may think Jazz Age, Prohibition, Babe Ruth, Hemingway, Fitzgerald maybe Faulkner. Only a minority would throw John Dos Passos into that ring but he was in fact a giant of the time. His "USA Trilogy" and "Manhattan Transfer" were recognized and awarded the same acclaim as writers we know so much better today.

Hemingway wrote that "Manhattan Transfer" finally gave the world the real picture of New York City. Alfred Döblin was deeply influenced by Dos Passos's style. He ran with the same crowd. Drank and partied with them all and yet almost a hundred years later his own fame is far eclipsed by so many others. Why?

A great novel needs great characters and a central theme or conflict. Dos Passos was writing about a time and place; New York City in the first part of the 20 century. His focus is on atmosphere. He wants you to feel the city through it's accents, bustle, the frustrations of daily life, the food and drink and the movement of cars, taxis, subways, street cars and boats of every kind. Through all that he wants to convey the energy that's bursting in every direction but he also wants to expose the contradictions of daily life; war veterans not getting their bonuses, women yearning for more opportunity, backstreet abortions, failed marriages, banks and businesses and later drinking during prohibition.

Characters come in go very briefly, re-appearing later. There are so many that it takes perhaps the first half of the book to keep it straight. For me it was hard to follow let alone develop an empathy or curiosity for them. It felt very flat. He uses major events of the day as a timeline but aside from war and prohibition much of those references are obscure and thus one tends to lose a sense of time passing that he was likely successfully conveying to his contemporaries.

My conclusion is that it's too ambitious and there is too little for the modern reader to grasp. By doing so much there are interesting points and poignant scenes. But too often I was flipping back to see if I had already jumped to yet another vignette and double checking if he'd jumped a few weeks, months or years. Pulling this out of a time capsule I enjoyed this as a 1925 novel of early New York but I wonder if it were the book that I'd want to say best depicted New York at that time and I'd conclude that other works have surpassed it.

Handbook of clinical child psychology

This is indeed the "Bible" for the clinical child psychologist. As a pediatrician, who through all my professional life have worked closely with child psychologists, permit me to review this very serious and professional handbook. It is edited by C Eugene Walker from Oklahoma and Michael C Roberts from Kansas with 114 contributors (all from United States). The first edition of the handbook was published 18 years ago and it has since turned into a reference and guide for students, adademics and clinicians in the field. The book is divided into seven sections with a total of 55 chapters. The first section deals with child development and the first chapter with families and children in history with a focus on American history, but I especially liked the chapter by Judith A Chafel and Kathryn Gold Hadley on poverty and well-being of children and their families. This is a new addition to this edition, but a very important one. Poverty and hunger are old phenomena, but only recently become a subject of research and interest to politicians. They should be interested, because poverty is a major public health problem in many developed countries. Data from 1996 in the United States estimate that 20.5% of the children were living in poverty. This well researched paper will give you information on definition of poverty, effects on development, health and psychosocial risks, resiliency and implications for clinical intervention. Section two provides different diagnostic assessments of children and adolescents, section three deals with problems of early life and clinical problems of birth, neonatology, infant and preschool period and section four about problems of childhood. This last section has 16 chapters with some interesting entries. I especially liked the chapter on mental retardation, which takes into account the 1992 American Association on Mental Retardation (AMMR) definition of mental retardation, where not only IQ, but multidimential classification was used as a novel way to look upon mental retardation. I would have liked an entry on the use of the word "mental retardation", which is very much debated (sometimes very hotly like at the last international conference in Seattle in August 2000) and at all not in use in many parts of the world, where instead the term "intellectual disability" is preferred. Section five has nine relevant chapters on adolescence, but I would like to see a chapter on teenage pregnancy in the next edition, because that is especially a problem in United States and United Kingdom, where we are talking about potential psychological risks for the next generation also. Section six conveys intervention strategies with good chapters on hospitalization and pharmacotherapy among others. The last section has special topics like cultural issues, divorce, grief, ethics and forensic evaluation. The chapter on impact of a parent chronic illness is very interesting and I would also suggest a chapter on chronic illness or disability in the child for the next edition. This topic is mentioned in another chapter (on contemporary issues), but deserves a full chapter. The words disability and intellectual disability are not mentioned even in the index. In this section I especially like the chapter on child maltreatment by Barbara L Bonner and collegues, which is a good review of the field of child abuse and neglect, but again the focus in on the United States and international work in the field not mentioned. A chapter on research in child psychology and the use of internet should be added for the next edition. The effects of the internet on children and adolescents should also be added. We recently had a case here in Israel, where an internet connection between two adolescents (a Jewish male and Arab female) were used by terrorists to capture and murder the 14 year old boy. I would have liked to see a section eight with chapters on the future of infancy, childhood and adolescence both in the United States, but also a chapter on international work and research in the field of child psychology. All in all a very positive review for a very useful handbook that can be used by both psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and physicians and thanks for a good editing job. It was a pleasure to read and use this handbook.

Is it worth it?

The strength of the book is that it summarizes the main issues on assessment and treatment quite well. Certainly worthwhile for a quick reference to current opinion on topics but if you're after the finer detail of theory this may not be your book and you might want to try "Child Psychopathology" by Mash & Barkley. The question to ask is, is this book worth $170USD new? If you don't mind spending this money then the book is a useful addition to a professional library for advanced students and professionals.

Highly recommended for pediatric clinical workers.

I am writing about the 3rd edition, which is the most current volume. The only disappointment that I have about this text is that I did not obtain it much earlier. The chapters are well written with many references for further study. The practitioner can keep abreast of the current literature on topics that s/he may already be familiar, or obtain authoritive information about other clinical areas not part of one's regular practice. This text is not written in the style of a dictionary, that is, the reader is given a summary in the style and length of a journal article. The book compliments the older volumes of the American Handbook of Psychiatry for which I have still found much use.
I also give strong recommendation for the Social Worker's Desk Reference that is available on Amazon. This latter book is a 2002 text that for some disorders gives a better summary than the Handbook. The Desk Reference is of value regardless of one's clinical license.

Craig Breckenridge has used 3D extensively during his work as Senior Designer, Drawing Office Manager and Engineering Systems Manager at Dynamic Structures for projects such as the Gemini Observatories, the Thirty Meter Telescope, the Helix Bridge in Seattle, Harry Potter's Forbidden Journey ride, and many others.

About the Author
A native of Louisiana, Kevin Sivils has been a coach and teacher for 25 years. In the course of his coaching career, he has been a head coach for 22 seasons while winning 464 career wins and garnering 8 Coach of the Year awards. A current resident of the state of Texas, Coach Sivils has also worked extensively in athletic administration and athletic event promotion. Interestingly enough for a basketball coach from the Southern United States, he is an ice hockey fan, having been introduced to the sport by his wife Lisa, a native of Michigan and a Detroit Red Wings fan. His other passions include the history of North American Railroads and dogs, of which he currently has three. He and his wife Lisa work with an Italian Greyhound rescue serving as foster parents for abused and neglected Italian Greyhounds until they are ready to be adopted.

Rebounding is often an overlooked part of a basketball game but coaches know how important it can be. Coach Sivils provides some thoughts on rebounding generally the most important being emphasis. The heart of the book is the rebounding drills. The book provides drills covering technique, competition, team cooperation, the fast break and more. The drills are also wonderfully annotated with coaching points and areas of emphasis for each drill.

Get every rebound

Get EVERY rebound. Pound that into the players' heads. There's a lot of great information in this. Every coach should read it, and I honestly think every player should read it. There's not any "single best way" to play basketball, but if you don't rebound, you basically can't win. There are incredibly rare exceptions to that, but you definitely can't win against quality opponents. Great book.
