Factory-Original Ford RS Cosworth: The originality guide to the Ford Sierra, Sapphire & Escort RS Cosworths, by Dan Williamson

When Ford teamed up with Cosworth Engineering to breathe life onto its humdrum Sierra, few knew it would be the birth of a motoring legend. Through circuit racing and supercar-humbling on-road ability, the 1985 Sierra RS Cosworth quickly became a household name. A practical four-seater boasting 204bhp from its two-litre turbocharged powerplant, the RS Cosworth's massive performance was equalled only by an extroverted rear wing designed for high-speed stability.. While motorsport machines scooped innumerable victories and increasingly powerful engines, in 1987 Ford homologated a yet-more-spectacular Sierra - the 224bhp RS500. It instantly became a desirable collector's piece.. Other RS Cosworths soon followed. The restrained four-door Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth of 1988 was Ford's vision of a 150mph executive express; two years later, its four-wheel-drive successor returned the firm to rallying. By 1992, Ford had squeezed the 4x4's running gear into a shorter Escort body, complete with 227bhp engine and ever-more-aggressive aerodynamic aids. The limited-edition Monte Carlo came in 1994, followed by the final RS Cosworth - a revised Escort with smaller turbocharger and user-friendly appeal. Production ceased in 1996. Today, each model has a loyal following among motorsport fans and fast Fords enthusiasts. And as the cars become increasingly sought-after, so too does the pursuit of perfection. This book examines RS Cosworth authenticity, outlining standard specifications alongside in-depth colour photography of outstanding examples of the breed. From body panels and trim to turbochargers and tyres; from interior fabrics and paint schemes to shock absorbers and stickers, Ford's factory-original fitments are covered in comprehensive detail.

About the Author

Sporting Escorts have been a fixture in Dan Williamson's life for longer than he remembers. Early childhood spent sliding across the seats of his dad's GT-engined Mk1 instilled an anorak-level addiction to fast Fords. Like most Escort enthusiasts, his condition is incurable. Dan was given his first car aged 15, a 1972 Mk1 that's perhaps best described as a long-term project. It currently shares garage space with a '71 Mexico and a 1600 Sport. Dan trained as a newspaper reporter before deciding it's more fun to write about cars. He's been a motoring journalist since 1997, working for the UK's leading automotive publishers. Today he's a freelance contributor to a variety of magazines, including Fast Ford.

Russel Middlebrook is 23 years old, gay, and living in trendy Seattle, but life isn't keeping up with the hype. Most of his friends have a direction in life - either ruthlessly pursuing their careers or passionately embracing their own aimlessness. But Russel is stuck in place. All he knows is that crappy jobs, horrible dates, and pointless hook-ups just aren't cutting it anymore.

What's the secret? What does everyone else know that he doesn't?

Enter Kevin, Russel's perfect high school boyfriend. Could rekindling an old flame be the thing Russel needs to get his life back on track? Or maybe the answer lies in a new friend, an eccentric screenwriter named Vernie Rose, who seems plenty wise. Or what the hell? Maybe Russel will find some answers by joining his best friend Gunnar's crazy search for the legendary bigfoot!

One way or another, Russel is determined to learn the all-important secret to life, even if it's a thing he doesn't even know he doesn't know.

The Thing We All Needed To Know (And Read!)
By Brian the Writer
Brent Hartinger enters the world of NA Literature exactly the same way he entered the world of YA Literature, with deft aptitude for knowing the pulse of his readers. In The Thing I Didn’t Know I Didn’t Know, Hartinger has captured the fears, concerns and insecurities of the lost 20something in the 21st Century. Hartinger’s readers have grown up since the debut of his highly acclaimed first novel, The Geography Club, and his most famous character Russel Middlebrook has grown up, too. Readers will feel a sense of familiarity when reading The Thing I Didn’t Know I Didn’t Know and will be pleased to be able to reconnect with their favorite characters (Russel, Min, Gunnar, Kevin), but now on the same level and maturity as them.

Hartinger was smart to tackle the issues plaguing the young, gay, 20something. NA is a new but much needed genre in literature. It bridges the gap between the YA years and the over 25 adult years, and I applaud Hartinger for giving us a novel that explores this crucial and often unwritten about time in anyone’s life. The novel feels so real and so now. Readers will be able to identify with Russel’s conflicts: the complexities of hooking-up, the aimlessness of not knowing your true passion and purpose in life, and the desire for an ex who reminds you of a time when you were truly happy.

I found myself once again connecting with Russel Middelbrook and his friends and was glad to have the opportunity to do so. Few authors have been able to take their young adult characters and age them into adulthood as successfully as Brent Hartinger has done. What is so great is that once again, when we need Hartinger and his characters the most, they are here to give us the insight and the support we need.

(I didn't want it to end so I tried to make the book last as long as possible) I just knew I had to write a review to say how am
By Andrew Carrillo
After finally finishing the latest installment of the Russel Middlebrook series, (I didn't want it to end so I tried to make the book last as long as possible) I just knew I had to write a review to say how amazing it is. I've been a fan of the series since Geography Club first came out, pun intended, and seeing Russel's evolution in the latest entry is a breath of fresh air.

I won't go into the details of the plot because you just have to read the synopsis for that, but Russel has come a long way since we first saw the closeted teen back in the day. What I loved most about this book is the fact that readers old and new can relate to Russel on some level. Brent does an excellent job portraying gay and single men in their twenties and the struggle we all face when trying to find out who we really are. Russel struggles with finding his place on the spectrum (single and ready to mingle...unrequited love...post-grad job and the struggle of finally getting your "dream" job) and I couldn't help but relate to that on every level.

What I enjoy about this series is that I keep wanting to know more and more about the characters. I love seeing how far they've come because that's what makes me love book series...wanting to be part of each character's journey. Min...Gunnar...Russel...Kevin...all of them.

How does this compare to the others in the series? It's just as good if not better. The other four in the series all tie together as does the latest installment, but you don't necessarily have to read them in order to understand The Thing I Didn't Know I Didn't Know. Brent does a good job of getting the readers to understand the backstory without repeating every single detail that took place in the original books. I look forward to reading the next chapter in Russel's adventure.

Exceptional & Thoroughly Enjoyable Romance Novel!!
By Christoff
I'm starting my review with a short personal experience with this book. I liked the first 1/3 of the book, but then kind of lost interest in the next 1/3. I always take the book I'm currently reading with me to the laundromat on Thursday afternoons. Lo and behold, one Thursday evening I realized that I'd left "The Thing I Didn't Know" at the laundromat. I reasoned that it probably happened because I had lost interest in the book. Was I surprised a week later to find the book pretty much untouched in the laundromat. I picked it up, took it home, recapped and continued reading.

How glad I am that I reconnected with this book. Something happened in that week during the absence of the book. because I really liked the book to completion. Russel is an adorable character; very relatable and his encounters so realistic. I loved his sexual encounters with Boston, Felicks and of course Kevin - especially their meeting at the "stinky picnic gazebo" .

Then there's the inimitable Vernie & how their friendship came about; His room mates Gunnar & Min; his jobs at the Bake + as lifeguard; his coining of the comparisons of Unstoppable Career Drive versus Passionate Aimlessness; the "Seattle scene"............ I so loved this book when I finished it, that I immediately ordered the sequel "Barefoot In The City of Broken Dreams".

I can not recommend this book strongly enough! If you like exceptional romance novels with an edge, then buy this book NOW and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I did. I will also certainly re-read it again!! Bravo Brent Hartinger! Long live Russel Middlebrook!!

Wearable Robots: Biomechatronic Exoskeletons, by José L. Pons

A wearable robot is a mechatronic system that is designed around the shape and function of the human body, with segments and joints corresponding to those of the person it is externally coupled with. Teleoperation and power amplification were the first applications, but after recent technological advances the range of application fields has widened. Increasing recognition from the scientific community means that this technology is now employed in telemanipulation, man-amplification, neuromotor control research and rehabilitation, and to assist with impaired human motor control.

Logical in structure and original in its global orientation, this volume gives a full overview of wearable robotics, providing the reader with a complete understanding of the key applications and technologies suitable for its development. The main topics are demonstrated through two detailed case studies; one on a lower limb active orthosis for a human leg, and one on a wearable robot that suppresses upper limb tremor. These examples highlight the difficulties and potentialities in this area of technology, illustrating how design decisions should be made based on these.

As well as discussing the cognitive interaction between human and robot, this comprehensive text also covers:

  • the mechanics of the wearable robot and it’s biomechanical interaction with the user, including state-of-the-art technologies that enable sensory and motor interaction between human (biological) and wearable artificial (mechatronic) systems;
  • the basis for bioinspiration and biomimetism, general rules for the development of biologically-inspired designs, and how these could serve recursively as biological models to explain biological systems;
  • the study on the development of networks for wearable robotics.

Wearable Robotics: Biomechatronic Exoskeletons will appeal to lecturers, senior undergraduate students, postgraduates and other researchers of medical, electrical and bio engineering who are interested in the area of assistive robotics. Active system developers in this sector of the engineering industry will also find it an informative and welcome resource.

The Road Beneath My Feet, by Frank Turner

The compulsively readable memoir by singer-songwriter and master lyricist Frank Turner, documenting his rise to fame, one house show at a time

In the fall of 2005, Frank Turner was virtually unheard of. His rock band, Millions Dead, was finishing up a grueling tour and had agreed that their show on September 23 would be their last. The entry on the band's schedule for September 24 read simply: "Get a job."

Cut to July 2012―the London Olympics, where Turner and his backing band, The Sleeping Souls, are playing the pre-show, after having headlined sold-out arena shows across the UK for months.

The Road Beneath My Feet is the unvarnished story of how Turner went from crashing on couches at house shows to performing for thousands of screaming fans who roar his every lyric back at him. Told through tour reminiscences, this is a blisteringly honest tale of a rock career that's taken Turner from drug-fuelled house parties and the grimy club scene to international prominence and acclaim. But more than that, it is an intimate account of what it's like to spend your life constantly on the road, sleeping on floors, invariably jetlagged, all for the love of playing live music.

but instead it reads a bit like Bridget Jones' Diary without Darcy
By Tumblina
I thought there would be stories about how he developed as a musician or the stories behind some of his songs, but instead it reads a bit like Bridget Jones' Diary without Darcy. The book is broken up by shows and recounts: how f***ed up he got before/after the show, how packed the club was, and whether he slept on a floor, couch or in a bed.

Each time he gets close to an interesting story - the death of a friend, his relationship with his father - he backs away with the statement that it is too personal. He's probably right, and I admire his decision to keep the personal private, but that leaves thin material for storytelling.

I could hear Frank reading it! :)
By Brenda Jackels
As a Frank Turner fan, I couldn't possibly pass this book up. I found it a fascinating read, and could hear Frank's voice while reading about his journeys and antics. I enjoyed hearing about the background of some of this songs, and it's fascinating to me what he (and I would imagine many other musicians) has gone through in order to make a living at something he loves.

Anyone interested in touring as a musician would find this an informative read, even if there's no interest in Frank himself.

Martin Frobisher: Elizabethan Privateer, by James McDermott

Adventurous and wilful, the swashbuckling Martin Frobisher was both a brave sea-commander who served Elizabeth I with distinction and a privateer who single-mindedly pursued his own interests. This highly entertaining biography provides the first complete picture of the life and exploits of Frobisher, from his voyages in search of the fabled Northwest Passage to his courageous resistance to the Spanish Armada and his activities as privateer and sometime pirate. The book explores Frobisher's vigorous personality and its manifestation in the turbulence of his career and his impact on others. It also illuminates the robust world of maritime enterprise in the sixteenth century, when the shifting objectives of the Elizabethan age brought together felons, merchants, and great officers of state. James McDermott, a leading authority on Martin Frobisher and the Northwest Passage, offers a riveting account of the explorer, based on all extant manuscript and documentary sources. McDermott sets aside the distortions of Frobisher's popular reputation as a hero and offers instead a richly detailed portrait of a fascinating but flawed man whose ceaseless search for wealth and fame defined his ext

Frobisher Bay in the Canadian subarctic and a plaque at St. Giles Cripplegate in London are all that remain of the memory of Sir Martin Frobisher (1535-1594). McDermott's crowded biography, as thorough a life of the elusive adventurer as the relatively few available facts make possible, traces his checkered career from a stark Yorkshire boyhood to the coasts of Africa and North America, and his privateering on the Atlantic to his later undertakings for Queen Elizabeth. McDermott fills in the gaps with supposition and parallel descriptions of such seafaring contemporaries as Drake and Hawkings, veering off into material that few readers, other than aficionados of privateering and particularly those knowledgeable about antique nautical terms, would care to know. Frobisher's three unrewarding voyages to barren "Meta Incognita" (now Baffin Island) in search of a northwest passage to the Orient and failed get-rich-quick scheme to mine for gold in Inuit country left him in need of money, and so he resumed his semi-official piracy of foreign ships. Elizabeth, who in 1588 was in need of a tough captain, made Frobisher a vice-admiral, and his role in thwarting the Spanish Armada earned him a knighthood. Despite the dry prose, independent historian McDermott, who has been researching his hero for 30 years, successfully evokes the life of an admittedly unlikable character, as he survived the downside of ambition and climbed upward no matter what the cost to others. Ultimately, the fame of his "brief asides" into legitimacy, even his heroic death during a mission "under the authority of the Broad Seal of England," McDermott concludes with apparent sadness, "should not disguise the truth of a career whose despoliations had defined Martin Frobisher." From Library Journal
This is the first full-length biography of Frobisher since the publication of William McFee's Life of Martin Frobisher in 1928. Independent scholar McDermott worked his way through a labyrinth of archival documents to create this compelling portrait of a true Elizabethan sea dog and his world. McDermott is quick to point out that Frobisher was more than just an unscrupulous privateer but also the point man for England's nascent colonial ambitions. By examining his subject's life, McDermott exposes the intricate web of public and private ambitions that compelled Elizabethan England to take to the seas. It was Frobisher's courage and nautical skills that made him the natural choice to lead the search for the Northwest Passage that brought English exploration to the shores of North America. Frobisher never found fabulous wealth, but his prowess as a sea warrior helped crush the Spanish Armada and establish England's proud maritime tradition. McDermott tells his story with wit and style. Recommended for public and academic libraries. Jim Doyle, Sara Hightower Regional Lib., Rome, GA

From Booklist
Frobisher has never achieved the near mythological status of a Drake, Raleigh, or a few other Elizabethan swashbucklers. Yet his accomplishments as a naval commander, explorer, and privateer who often operated on both sides of the law are impressive, and they provide the makings of an exciting biography. McDermott, an independent scholar and leading authority on Frobisher's career, has ambivalent feelings toward his subject. McDermott pays tribute to Frobisher's audacious spirit, physical courage, and maritime skills, yet he also stresses the man's tendency to become obsessed with his narrow self-interest, and Frobisher was capable of shockingly ruthless brutality even by the standards of a brutal age. This well-written and balanced account provides a portrait of a chaotic, adventurous age and an interesting but amoral man who seemed all too at home in that age. Jay Freeman

Martin Frobisher is remembered today for Frobisher Bay in Canada and as a sea captain in Elizabeth's fleet against the Armada. In death, as in life, his exploits are often overshadowed by more flamboyant seafarers such as Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins. Martin Frobisher: Elizabethan Privateer attempts to rescue the captain from semi-obscurity and place his life in the context of its times. The spotty documentation on much of Frobisher's life makes this no easy task but the author is able to fill in the gaps with dexterity.

Frobisher was born in Yorkshire England in the mid 1530s. After the death of his father in 1542, Frobisher was set to live with various relatives ending up at his maternal uncle's in London. Sir John Yorke was a well-connected merchant who set Frobisher to sea most likely because he was a drain on Yorke's finances. Frobisher fell out with his uncle after the latter failed to help him escape from captivity in Portuguese hands and soon struck out on his own. By the 1560s Frobisher was well established as a privateer. In this profession he often showed little regard for the legality of which ships were "good prizes" and which were not. He was called often in front of the admiralty court to answer charges of piracy.

In 1576 Frobisher became the captain of an expedition to find the northwest passage from Europe to China. This expedition failed in its goal but did spark a gold rush when a souvenir rock brought back was thought to contain gold. Two more expeditions found no gold and nearly bankrupted many of the investors in the scheme.

Frobisher's abilities as a captain earned him a place among Elizabeth's admirals during the Spanish Armada of 1588. His command decisions during that time remain controversial to this day. While some see Frobisher as an unskilled ship handler who needlessly put his ship in danger, the author is convinced that Frobisher was courageously placing his ship in harm's way to interpose himself between the coast and the Spanish fleet. Unlike other of Elizabeth's captains, Frobisher was never able to become a member of the Queen's inner circle. He rose on merit alone and his star continued to wax even as other of the `sea dogs' watched their reputation falter. Most of the famed sailors modern readers would view as his peers were disliked by Frobisher as much as he was disliked by them.

After the Armada, Frobisher continued in her majesties services as a privateer. He quickly returned to his former way of intercepting and plundering ships from both friend and foe. Despite his greed, he was clever enough to understand that England's main interest was in destroying Spanish treasure even when it could not be captured. In this view he was more willing to place public good above personal self-interest more than the Queen and members of the privy council. Frobisher's courage never deserted him; he was killed in 1594 leading a landing party on a Spanish fort.

James McDermott has deftly accomplished a difficult task. He has written a comprehensive portrait of an unlikable character without overly condemning him or attempting to redeem him. Well researched and documented, Martin Frobisher: Elizabethan Privateer, is an informative and entertaining book well suited for academic and general reading.

Relatively Unknown Figure
By Alexander Bielakowski, Ph.D.
Sir Martin Frobisher (1535-1594) was both a pirate and a Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy. The dichotomy of those two positions works as a good introduction to a man who spent much of his career searching for the fabled Northwest Passage, but also, in 1588, had a significant role in thwarting the Spanish Armada (which earned him a knighthood). Yet, Frobisher never achieved the historical status of his contemporaries Sir Francis Drake or Sir Walter Raleigh. In fact, the only reminders of Frobisher's existence are Frobisher Bay in Canada and a plaque at St. Giles Cripplegate in London.

The author, James McDermott, traces Frobisher's life from his boyhood in Yorkshire to expeditions in Africa, North America, and the Caribbean. It was Frobisher's three unsuccessful voyages in search of a northwest passage to Asia, which caused him to turn to piracy against the Spanish Empire in the Caribbean. The respectability of his later undertakings for Queen Elizabeth do not overwhelm his unsavory early activities or his personal ruthlessness.

McDermott, an independent scholar and a leading authority on both Martin Frobisher and the Northwest Passage, spent almost 30 years researching his topic. The end result is the life story of an unlikable individual, who climbed the social latter despite the cost to others around him. The author based his story on all of the available archival and printed primary sources, as well as numerous secondary sources. The only other full-length biography of Frobisher was William McFee's Life of Sir Martin Frobisher, which was published in 1928.

This work is primarily recommended for those interested in naval history or the Elizabethan period.

Wonderul and excellent research tome
By rakehell@earthlink.net
A wonderful book written about one of England's first Maritime explorers. Frobisher usually is written with such notables of the time as Drake, Hawkins and Raleigh even if his famous voyage to the Northwest was a failure. He still managed to retain his dignity and eventually became one of England's greatest sailors. Mr. McDermott's book is a wonderful and complete picture of a quite-not-so-honest Yorkshire man who rose up to become a great explorer despite his past dealings with privateering and the law. Frobisher's last biography (AFAIK) was published in 1923 (William McFee) yet Mr. McDermotts excellent research and writing clearly rates above Mr. McFee's outline of a man whose history was written by happenstance and luck. I found this book to be invaluable research of a not-so-well-known man whom I portray at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in California. Well researched and well written. A must for any 16th century maritime history fan or historian. Cheers!
