Across countries and centuries, this book explores a fundamental social and demographic change: the emergence of a planet of towns and cities. But it looks at this densification of human and economic relations through a specific lens, the increased connectivity triggered by strategic urban bridges.
As places of encounters and exchanges, bridges have played a major role in the urbanization of our planet. Through the history of twenty-four cities, The Bridge and the City explains how these monuments have influenced urban development over all continents. The most fascinating cities in Europe (Paris, Rome, Istanbul, Saint-Petersburg, London) all possess fantastic bridges. The same could be said about North American cities (New York, San Francisco) and cities in other regions of the world. Besides, the most famous bridges have almost always been erected at a critical juncture in the history of their host cities. It could be argued that “the bridge makes the city” because, in history, the city reaches a new dimension when its “grand” bridge is inaugurated. This was the case in Prague and Florence in the fourteenth century, in Mostar and Venice in the sixteenth century, in Paris and Isfahan in the seventeenth century, in Budapest, New York and London in the nineteenth century, and in Sydney, San Francisco, Kolkata and Shanghai in the twentieth century.
Bridges can be seen as founding milestones, buttonholes and laces of the urban fabric, as well as signatures of the built environment. As architectural objects and engineering feats, they directly reflect the technical achievements and aesthetical values of their time, as well as the socio-cultural context of their construction. The Bridge and the City tells and illustrates a universal love story, over space and time, from Rome and its Ponte Sant’Angelo (134) and Paris and its Pont-Neuf (1607) to New York and its Brooklyn Bridge (1883) and Shanghai and its Nanpu Da Qiao (1991).
An ode to the world’s most beautiful bridges, apprehended in their diverse historical settings, The Bridge and the City is an analytical and visual treasure that will delight bridge and city lovers on every continent.

A fantastic book!
By mathias spaliviero
Mr. Daniel Biau has written a “chef-d’oeuvre”. This is not just a book about bridges and cities… It also refers to the inextricable relationship between human settlements and rivers which is at the foundation of any great civilisation.
This book is different from others of its kind. It is not only well illustrated and full of very interesting historical and cultural background for each bridge, city and country which is being analysed, but it also includes a very unique personal, aesthetical, rigourous and passionate touch. The author manages to involve the reader in this fantastic journey around the world and facilitate the understanding of the crucial role played by bridges since the beginning of the urbanisation process until nowadays. It contains a deep reflection and a lot of insights on cities whose bridges helped people to connect and co-exist, making a better development possible, in all senses.
Highly recommended!

The photos are beautiful and the narrative is extremely well-documented
By Zhenshan Zhang
Before reading this book, I never had such an in-depth understanding about urban bridges integrating engineering, architecture, history, culture, sociology, particularly about the linkages between bridges and cities. The book gave me a chance to review and re-member those bridges and cities I know and to learn more on those I did not know before. The author shares his rich experience, knowledge and unique angle of view about the development of the world cities, including Shanghai, Kolkata, London, Paris and New York. The photos are beautiful and the narrative is extremely well-documented. The many ilustrations provide an artistic pleasure.
In our rapidly urbanizing world, the analysis and references of the author on urban planning, economic history and social development are extremely important and thought-provoking. I would recommend the book to all those interested in urban issues.

The Bridge as Insight into Urbanization
By Amazon Customer
Daniel Biau’s The Bridge and the City is that rare work that merges personal insight, professional experience, history, and sociology into a fascinating study of bridges and urban development. It made me think of urbanization, and the role of bridges within urban spaces, in new ways. Its wide ranging erudition is complemented by numerous beautiful photographs of bridges and cities throughout the world, many of them taken by the author. Biau, a specialist in urban planning and city management, gives us insight into the engineering, architecture, and culture of bridges. In my view, he shows us that the bridge is a metaphor for the promise of modernity, linking the universalism of design with the particularity of culture and place, connecting disparate spaces and peoples together.
